This is the saddest story I have read for a long time.
Will they ever try to stop everyone having guns.

An 11-year-old boy in the US state of Tennessee has been held on suspicion of shooting dead an eight-year-old girl in a row over a puppy.

The boy has been charged with first-degree murder as a juvenile.

According to police, he shot neighbour McKayla Dyer on Saturday evening after she refused to let him see her puppy.

Her mother Latasha said that the two children went to the same school in White Pine, about 200 miles (315km) east of Nashville.

She said the family had had trouble with the boy when they first moved to the area.

"He was making fun of her, calling her names, just being mean to her. I had to go to the principal about him and he quit for a while and then all of a sudden yesterday he shot her," Ms Dyer told WATE-TV.

"She was a precious little girl. She was mommy's girl. No matter how bad of a mood you were in, she could always make you smile."

"I want her back in my arms," she said.

The Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit organisation that compiles data on gun violence in the US, says 559 children aged 11 or under have been killed or injured in the United States in gun violence so far this year.

That is an outrageous statistic, don't care how precious your "right to bear arms" laws are, get a grip :headbang:

When you see the photo of the little girl, it seems much more upsetting.

I saw this earlier, when will Obama grow a pair and do something about these archaic gun laws in the US? How many more children will die before the laws are changed?
The deaths in gun related incidents for the year to date are horrendous, and they are supposed to be a civilised nation!

There's over 30,000 gun deaths per year in the USA, that's a medium sized football stadium to give you an idea of what that stat means, not far off 100 a day...

To be fair to Obama, he appears to want change, but Congress won't let him do it.

Fair enough, but surely they must realise that to continue as they are is complete insanity

The right to bear arms thing is a crock of ****, fine I will have some weapons grade plutonium then!!!

The constitution is generally a decent enough thing however it was written over 200 years ago, a lot of things have changed in that time, including language and understanding of language for a start.

The massively high amount of domestic gun crime is pretty much exclusively an American issue, whilst it does happen elsewhere nowhere near to the level in the US.

Whilst I really can't see a gun ban in the US happening, surely some other measures put in place, I understand there are a lot of unregistered guns, but you would think people should be held more accountable for their fire arms I mean honestly how the **** does an 11 year old get hold of a gun. It's so sad that with all these tragedies there is no desire by a lot of people stateside for change

While I agree with the general consensus reached above re America's unregulated gun ownership, my understanding is that in this sad case, the boy used a shotgun to shoot the girl, firing from a window of his trailer home. Technically, the same thing could happen in the UK.

In a land where you can do your shopping in Walmart and walk down a complete aisle of shiny new hand guns and shotguns and enough bullets to start a small war is it any wonder why they are so gun obsessed? There was a bank actually offering a free gun to anyone opening a certain account with them a few years ago. It's barmy...

Yeah saw that on the Michael Moore film Bowling for Columbine absolutely insane, well as long as you are not certified as criminally insane all is fine and dandy a gun is yours!!!

My opinion is like my opinion of dogs over here as long as it's registered to you any criminal offense caused or involving dog/gun should carry a very strong penalty to who it is registered to. I know this is by no means anywhere near a solution to the problem but hopefully those who choose to possess the item might think twice about it, might choose a slightly less powerful option and hopefully keep it safe and away from where it can cause/used by someone to cause harm.

The point is Hoops they are not a civilized nation. They have differences between rich and poor which are far greater than most European nations, larger ghettoes, more homelessness, more people not covered by any medical treatment, more people living in cardboard boxes, more addicts - more nutters , more or less more of everything which is dodgy. The Swiss have nearly as many guns but do live in a civilized nation which makes the difference - Sweden and Finland also have high rates of private gun ownership.

If only the poor little girl had been armed, she could have protected herself.
