To Muffin and Ernie my condolences to you both, there is not a lot to say when a close family or friend passes away you go through the motions most days then out of the blue it hits you about the fragility of life. The Hull City link is strong on this forum and it is shown on threads like this, it is the one thread where the usual recriminations and bitterness shown on other threads can be forgotten and I can thank you all for keeping this type of thread that way to show respect for those experiencing a sad loss.

Funny, I just bought one of his books this morning. I enjoyed the first Swedish-language series the most, very dark and Swedish!
I like his books better than the more recent Scandi stuff, Dragon Tattoo and all that.

Have you read Jo Nesbo? If not, find the Harry Hole novels, starting with The Redbreast and read on.

Never read any Mankell - might have to now as a tribute.

Nesbo is good. Occasionally the alco-cop thing gets a bit tiring, but most of the time it's pretty good stuff. If anything he's getting better too.

Thing is: I read from The Snowman and then sorted out the order. Then I came across two set in the Far East. I thought they were **** and that that was the way his writing was going. Turns out they were the preamble for the HH character, which gets going with The Redbreast.

Yeah, the first two were only translated into English in recent years, and they're not as good. I thought Police, his last one, was excellent.

That's the one I gave up on.

I'll get hold of some earlier titles & give him another go.

You can see why I gave up. My error - I looked at the wrong dates.
Yeah - give it another go Ben.

I've read and enjoyed most of them, good stories but I found Harry Hole a bit too caricatured. Put it this way, if I was on a desert island and I had to choose between the full set of Mankell or Nesbo I'd go for Mankell.

Anyway I suspect we've probably hijacked this thread a bit so, RIP Henning Mankell, end of.

At the risk of hijacking it a bit more, another author in this vein is Arnaldur Indridason. He has a set of books set in Reykjavic that are worth checking out.
