Once upon a time, women used to meet at the back fence to have their daily natter. It was one of the highlights of the day. A way to escape the boredom of the everyday grind. Then along came the the mass production of the phone on the end of the land line. In time, the mobile arrived and we were liberated. Or at least we thought we were. But all it did was allow the spread of the those among us who posses bad manners. As usual, society gravitated to the lowest common denominator. It let those among us with next to no idea of courtesy or servility to proliferate.

Today one only has to got to a dinner or a party to see how those with a mobile phone addiction behave. Huge numbers of any gathering can't keep their hands off their phones, even in company. It's as if they need the phone to give themselves some kind of validation. Sure we all need mobiles, especially at work, but to indulge because of addiction is pathetic. Whenever I see people in the company of others, using their phones every ten minutes, I can't help but think, poor soul.

Is it a bad sign that when you are on a date the girl keeps playing with her mobile? Or when you are hanging out with friends, they also keep playing with their mobiles?

I find it incredibly frustrating and disrespectful that when I am talking to someone they are on their phone.

Mate, it's as common as. If you ask them to put the phone away, they take umbrage. How can they not realise that a person has priority over a text?

That's not the only way that mobiles promote bad manners and lack of respect though Cyc. 15 years ago if you wnated ot go for a night out you had to make sure you were in a specified venue at an agreed time. If you were 10 minutes late then tough - you missed out. Sure you could phone the mate who lived enareest if you really had no alternative but to be late but if you just turned up late because you couldn't be bothered to be punctual then taht was it.

Now it's "oh i'll send you a text when i get there" and you ogften find yourself sat in a pub being bombarded by messages from inconsiderate people who canlt be arsed to follow proper timekeeping.

To be fair though if you find yourself trapped in a conversation with an absolute cock socket in the pub or at a party it is reassuring to be able to take an imaginary phone call..............

God yes. That really pisses me off because I pride myself on the fact that if I say I will be somewhere at such and such time I will be there 10 minutes early and I expect the same level of time keeping from others.

It's all arse about Chippy, it's just selfish behavior gone wild. There are so many people doing it, that's now considered acceptable. Bad manners are bad manners. Full stop.

One does go to dinner parties, but we usually discuss polo, wear monocles and stuff £10 pound notes into the pockets of the help.

One does love a good laugh.

I think i might be the only person on here who as not got a mobile.

I have a landline, call me on that if you want to chat, or simpler knock on the door.

The only plus side i can see for having a mobile, is if you are invovled in an accident & cannot reach a landline.

Thats one of the 3 things that put me off going to the pub

    1) the smoking ban
    2) the price of beer
    3) the worst one, people ****ing Texting others whilst trying to have a conversation

Number 1 - Best thing ever
    Number 2 - Bloody scandalous
Number 3 - Bloody annoying and since I don't take my mobile on a night out I am left to have a conversation with myself while they are all texting or updating Facebook. Maybe I'm just a boring fart and the mobiles are a way of breaking the boredom, I'm not sure.

I'm with you TMHR, I have a mobile, but it's always turned off, and in the car's glovebox.
