Good on the lad for sticking at it. I always felt he was a talent and it is good to see he now has a manager, and club who can offer him regular football.

A dramatic upturn in fortunes for Davide Santon; top of Serie A, starring at right-back and possibly on verge of an international recall.

It has been an interesting last 12 months for Davide Santon.

Coming back from injury he was ignored by both Alan Pardew and John Carver, before being pushed out of Newcastle United and accepting an initial loan spell at his old club Inter Milan.

After a long period without regular football on Tyneside, Santon the found himself playing week in week out at Inter.

He paid for that with a drop off in form and being left out towards the end of the season, but only after having played the required number of matches to activate and automatic permanent transfer for around £2.8m.

With Inter investing in quality players this summer the forecast looked bright, only for manager Mancini to suddenly declare that he had too many players and Davide Santon was one of those named as the club being willing to sell.

The window closed without any departure, although it was claimed that the former Newcastle player had turned down Watford.

Happily for Davide Santon, everything is on the up again and he has started all six of Inter Milan’s Serie A
    matches.

Even better is the fact they have won five of them and are currently joint top of the table on 15 points, whilst the dominant force of recent seasons, Juventus, are struggling with only five points from their six games.

Davide Santon has been playing in the right-back position which many Newcastle fans thought would suit him better than the left side.

He has been in tremendous form and there has been talk of a return to the national squad.

In addition, the latest ratings from the CIES Football Observatory have rated Davide Santon in the top ten performing full-backs in Serie A this season.

The Swiss based football statisticians make their analysis based on data provided by OptaPro and takes into account performance six key areas of the game:

Rigour, recovery, distribution, take on, chance creation and shooting.

In the CIES ratings for the Premier League, Chancel Mbemba was rated as the top performing Under 21 central defender in England’s top tier.

Whilst his form was up and down for Newcastle United, still only 24 years old Davide Santon has his best years in front of him and was always a far better bet than Paul Dummett or Massadio Haidara to fully establish himself in the Premier League.

Still only 24! how is that! his been around forever, i remember him bursting on the scene for inter under mourinho and he was hailed as the new maldini, playing for italy at 19 and single handidly keeping CR7 out of a game in the champions league.

I wish him all the best, i hope he nails down a position in the national squad and really presses on, his got time on his side.

Good on Santon. Laughing in the face of that 'great' manager that didn't have a ****ing clue.

Was always a right back. Had this argument with many on here at the time. Handled well by Pardew who was a big fan. It was Carver who fell out with him and instructed his loan. He preferred Dummett and Haidara...

I know we like to blame everything on Pardew, but sadly this is one that cannot be leveled at him. He wasn't fit earlier in the season with the recurring knee problem. McClaren also bears no responsibility as the clause inserted by the powers that be stated he went for a fee after certain number of games. He got an international recall under Pardew.

Sorry to rain on your hate parade lads

Once again The Mag letting their Pardew hatred/negative attitude get in the way of a feel good story about a former player. It is utter trash.

The main question is why have we never bought a fcking left back? Santon should have been kept as Janmaat's deputy, and we have always needed a 1st choice LB.

Got to be honest, I've watched 2-3 games of Inter's on B.T. Sport Europe recently this season and he hasn't done anything of note for me. Fair play to him though for making it in the Italy squad.

Don't let facts get in the way of a bit of misdirected Pardew bashing though.

I always liked him. Thought he seemed to genuinely like playing for us. Was a shame when we let him go if you ask me. He should have played at RB for us.

Fairly average defender IMHO. Not a patch on Enrique before him, but still ten times the player Haidara will ever be.

Should never have been sold is way better than people and fans as usual at this club gave him credit for.

Not sure it matters who plays where anymore, the club is fundamentally broken. Each player leaves desperate for air, each player who comes is inevitably not good enough or can't wait to get out again. It's a cancerous black hole of a club. Ashley needs to sell his broken toy and we have to pray someone is pretty good with the Loctite. There's simply no other answer.
