What's gone wrong for the premiership clubs playing in Europe..
The easy answer is overpaid mercenary players both foreign and English being paid extraordinary sums of money each week and generally they couldn't give a toss, win, lose or draw they go home in their posh cars to their expensive homes and live a life of luxury that all of us could only dream about.
All this TV money is ruining football and it's time the premiership clubs woke up and smelt the coffee because this is all going to end in tears for a lot of clubs. Oh and don't mention the corrupt governing bodies who are supposed to look after this once great sport, the whole thing is a f...ing joke.

I'm honestly quite pleased to see the English clubs falling flat on their arses in Europe. This could be the wake up call needed.

I know that. My point is you answered the question by saying its easy ad it full of overpiad mercenaries who couldnt givr a toss. Win losr or draw they go home to their luxury houses and fancy lives.

Just like many in the spanish league etc. Yet they seem to do ok.

So maybe the answer is not so clear cut.

I get the inference, all leagues have players paid these huge wages, it is generally accepted that the premiership pays way more than say Italy and Spain do that is why we are awash with foreign players and you hardly see many going the other way, Gareth Bale excepted. The point I am trying too make is we pay more wages to average players than elsewhere, a point I thought I'd covered in my original post. We end up with mercenary players who don't care about the club's their playing for.

might want to take a look at this (it is for last season)

    http://sporteology.com/top-10-highest-paid-soccer-players-2015/11/

top 5 highest earners are in Spain, with the exception of 3rd highest who is at PSG

there are only 2 players based in England who make that list. Rooney and Aguero.
Thats cos british players arent good enough, so Spanish other European leagues arent interested in them ?

Name me one british player, Bale excluded, who has the talent needed to attract the likes of Madrid ?

The reason English clubs arent succeeding in Europe, is that the core of the top clubs are foreigners so they have no long term loyalty to the clubs they play for. Why do English clubs rely for heavily on Foreign players ? Because locally grown talent is sadly lacking.

Who have the most successful European clubs atm ? Germany and Spain. both these countries, more than 50% of the footballers playing in their leagues are "locals" were as in england, more than 50% are foreign.

Get used to one country or another being a failure and having to look at its so called "grass roots" when their big clubs fail. There is hardly a club in Europe that consists of nationals and SAmerican and African are dominating European football regardless of borders. As it stands the ECL is as big as or bigger than the WC where great players for club are found out having to play for a non-bought team.

The difference is that a lot of players who play for Barca, Madrid etc have come through their youth system, even if they are S. American in origin

Agreed the talent is lacking, the miniscule English talent is grossly overpaid.. Is the BPL Foreign contingent due to absurd amount of money by Sky etc?

    Vicious circle ?

Low British (local grown) talent pool, clubs needs to get foreign players to compete, less focus on academies / less locally grown talent getting a chance to play, talent pool gets smaller, more foreigners needed
and the massive amount of sky money allows the EPL to attract the best

Would be great to see more youth players being sent out to play in foreign leagues imo. Reckon it would do players a world of good to get taught another playing style for a while - say, at Hoffenheim in Germany or Levante in Spain.
