Probably, Game of Thrones was made because of the popularity of The Lord of The Rings movies and Harry Potter and......

Vikings got made because everyone knows how great Vikings were, right? Unless you lived in England, (or France, or Ireland). They also know how wimpish their Saxon enemies were...don't they? Until Alfred and his Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset chaps kicked the c**p out of them. His daughter was quite a feisty, equal-opportunities in-your-face, 10th century, female role model too! And as for his grandson......dumped the Welsh, Scots, Irish, and Norse in one huge battle and created England.Quite a CV.

I'd say a series based on part of that history was long overdue. Beats yet ANOTHER tedious soap about the Tudors.

Get your point about the nudity....but isn't HBO American?

Without doubt Vin, but sift through the rhetoric and there's some good points.

Æthelflæd is one of my all-time heroines, and was mainly responsible for defeating the Danes/Vikings/Norsemen and paving the way for England to be born, at least according to authorities like Michael Wood. Bernard Cornwell knew what he was doing by bringing her into the Last Kingdom books as Uhtred's lover, and I'm looking forward to seeing who they cast to play her.

Just noting this down so I don't forget. Just felt a little tremor run through the house at 02:19 Thursday 01/10/15. I shall look out for local reports, if any.

Normally, I don't get any sort of vibrations from traffic as it's too far away.

I have to say I'm happy with the new smoking law that's come in today, as long as it's enforced that is.

And just how are the police to enforce it? Pull over every car in which someone is smoking, just in case there's a kid in the back? Personally, though I'm as anti-smoking as the next person, I'd rather the police enforced the driving on most of Britain's roads. The standard of driving is getting worse, in my opinion ............

Fair enough, can't argue with that, but I think it is a good thing, a lot of people will stop for fear of getting caught, similar to being on the phone while driving. Obviously many still do it, but I bet it's a lot less than before.

The other week I drove up to Birmingham and back the following day. The number of people on their phones (and TEXTING for God's sake!) was terrifying! And, sadly, no police in sight. Very scary .....................
I do hope that people will stop because it's awful to see kids in cars full of smoke, but I have to feel sorry for the police.

There are certain things in life that are beyond my comprehension and one of them is smoking if you know something is really harmful to your health and could lead to your early death why continue doing it FFS. To smoke near babies and young children is a form of abuse and neglect. We have tried educating people about the risks, informing them and banning smoking in all sorts of places and yet people continue to do it. This law was needed and there may be issues about enforcing it but it will influence the action of many smokers and will benefit a great many children as a consequence and that is worth it.

Because it feels good, obviously. Maybe you should try it, might chill you out a bit.

All very good words, Godders, but nicotine is a very addictive drug and once you're in it's grip, it's tough to get out (as a reformed smoker for many years, I feel qualified to speak about it). However, I believe that e-cigs are a good way out, because (despite what is written about them) they do not fill the air (or lungs) with all sorts of crap including cyanide. But, as I don't smoke, I can't really comment on that, but it seems a good way to quit.
Agree with you regarding abuse, but try telling a 40 a day parent that he or she is harming their kids and you're likely to get abuse at you!

Give it a few years and e-cigs will be proved to have something dodgy in it.

I shared an office for a few weeks with a user when e-cigs came out. Before he was stopped by "the management" it was a very unpleasant time. Apart from the clouds of vapour and the smell of his latest flavour you are aware that at least residual nicotine is floating around which you have no choice but to inhale.

If people choose to smoke that's up to them. I dislike the 'aggressive' smoker who seems to want others to breath their smoke. Watch some smoker's behaviour in bus shelters, almost angry stuff.

Just watching the video of Eamonn Holmes 'interviewing' Jeremy Corbyn. Wow...

Just terrible from so many angles.
