Rolling Stones twice, Animals, Kinks, Chris Farlowe, Free twice, Slade were just some of the bands I saw at gigs arranged by the council at Brid Spa. I also saw in three consecutive weeks The Small Faces, The Who and Spencer Davis Group on the night England won the World Cup. Ike and Tina Turner Status Quo and Bowie were others put on by them. Some great nights thanks to the council in Brid.
Rod Stewart coming to Hull is decent, but pales into insignificance when you know Jason Donovan is currently appearing in Priscilla Queen Of The Desert at the New Theatre.

Hull City Hall is a great venue the last gig I saw was John Mayalls Bluesbrakers and Chickenshack with a guest guitarist being former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor an awesome evening.
Except for the Proclaimers and Abba Official show most of the forthcoming events seem to be comedians eg Bill Bailey,Dara O'Briain.Reeves and Mortimer etc.
All the big names at Brid were staged by the council. They had an Entertainments Officer who stood or fell by his decisions. In the sixties this often lead to safe options as the latest no 1 band used to sell out with 4,500+. The one time he listened to some of us was to get Geno Washington, who we assured him old sell out with mods coming from all over to see him despite him not having big hit singles. Geno got a better offer after the gig before so just didn't show up. Refunds had to be made to those who wanted them. After that it was back to the safe options, The Herd, Amen Corner and all the others loads of young lasses wanted to see. Don Robinson pissed off the council by hiring Little Richard the Thursday after the Stones appeared and making more money than they did by getting him to play a gig elswhere the same night and then bomb over to .Brid. Despite the fact he had already done one show he put on the best live performances.I have ever seen. The council got its own back when Robbie made a deal for Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and the Supremes and the Supremes to do a concert on the Tamla Tour and upping the price and demanding a percentage of ticket sales making it unviable.
Presumably Christine Perfect/McVie had left Chickenshack by then? Difficult to believe some of the bland stuff she did with Fleetwood Mac after hearing her singing I'd Rather Go Blind with Chicken Shack. Always regretted not seen John Mayalls Bluesbreakers when Peter .Green was with them.
Saw the same lineup in Leeds in 'Nov 67. Exceptional night. Taylor had replaced Peter Green in The Bluesbreakers, stayed with 'em for just under 2 years before he was persuaded to take over from the fired Brian Jones in mid-'69, shortly before his suspicious death. I can't remember if Christine Perfect/McVie was playing with Chickenshack at the gig, but I do remember seeing her with them in early '68. She moved on to PG's Fleetwood Mac soon after. '64-'69 was such a brilliant period of British Blues development.

No Chrissy McVie at the Hull gig Castro but I think it was billed Stan Webb's Chicken Shack without getting my programme out, signed by Mick Taylor and John Mayall by the way, I can't remember. Saw quite a few of the oldies at City Hall, The Shadows, no Cliff, but although musically perfect their performance was insipid, just like going through the motions. Marty Wilde was just fantastic along with a host of other oldie rock n rollers as was the American version with Bobby Vee, and others.
Saw a rather rotund Pete Green in Brentwood about 15 years ago. Was still a very good guitarist and decent voice but had a "minder" guitarist just in case.
I remember seeing Marty Wilde doing a rock and roll revival show in Leeds. In 1969! I was surprised how tall he was. He started every number with "let me take you all the way back to..." Funny thing to think that going back 11 years seemed a long time when nearly 50 years later people are still playing those records and watching old clips on YouTube. It was amusing when he did the same with Abergavenny "let me take you all the way back to 1968". To be fair when you watch some of the old clips of Oh Boy! he seems the nearest we had at the time to anyone with a rock and roll presence and attitude. Incidentally, he was a co-writer of "I'm a tiger".
Also like this. When my lad decided to start playing the guitar at 16 I played this and said you've got three and a half years to get to sound like he did at that time. Nothing like encouraging them and filling them full of confidence.
Saw him perform at Grimsby auditorium when he was in the early days of his long road back from illness, his voice wasn't as haunting as it used to be but, there were small glimpses of truly mesmerising playing - it was a privilege to be there.
Presumably that was Nigel Watson, a very accomplished lead guitarist in his own right, with him in PG's Splinter Group ?
Unfortunately can't remember who was supporting him but to the musically untrained eye don't think Pete made any serious boobs. The backing band was top notch.
