I saw Rod on his last tour at the Nec/Lg arena he was bloody good, over two hours, all the hits, apologised because he sang a couple of his new album, a fantastic crowd sing a long to Maggie May and others, his voice is still spot on as well. Still boots footballs into the crowd and has good banter between songs, oh and he supports Help for Heroes, had a segment with Lee Rigby on the big screen when he sang sailing I'm looking forward to it, he won't disappoint anyone
Brought back some great memories there Castro. Steam Packet & Brian Auger & The Trinity were brilliant bands. Saw both bands a few times in Leeds, Sheffield & Bradford in '65 and '66. Julie Driscoll was a gorgeous looking bird with a great voice. Had to drag her out of the ladies @ a Leeds University Student Union gig once as she was supposed to be on stage with Baldry etc.No idea what she'd been up to ! A few of us afterwards had a couple of pints with Long John Baldry in the student bar, Driscoll didn't show, much to our disappointment. Baldry seemed a good sort. Stewart wasn't there either - up to no good methinks. When Baldry died (he had been living in Vancouver for over 30 years I think), Rod Stewart chartered a private jet & brought a gang of (still living) Baldry contemporary musicians over for his funeral. LJB had discovered Rod The Mod busking on the London tube & essentially launched his career into the big time. IMO, the 60's were the golden era for British musicians.....best time of my life. Alexis Korner, Graham Bond Organization, Steam Packet, Brian Auger, John Mayall, Pete Green's Fleetwood Mac....could go on & on. Brilliant. Edit. How could I forget Cream..
Likely to get a few takers from over this side of the pond (US & Canada). Wish I could make it myself - still, a fair time to plan unless the tickets are going fast ?
I drove 150 miles, through a filthy blizzard, from Regina to Saskatoon on March 21, 2005 to see Rod Stewart. It was white knuckles the whole way and was probably one of the daftest things I've done. That said, Rod was brilliant, his voice was great, as was the song selelection and his banter was spot on and as he was leaving the stage for the intermission he said something like, "You lot have a couple of drinks while I go out and put chains on my tires so I can get back to the hotel." I was with my wife and two kids who were in their early twenties and it ranks as one of our favourite family adventures. Aside from the drive, that is!
Saw live many of the bands you list.Late '60's saw Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster and 2 excellent live bands- The Edgar Broughton Band and Soft Machine.Saw Nucleus once in mistake for Genesis
The Searchers Christmas show at City Hall is about HCC limit. It is a remarkable gesture by MKM and a huge gamble on their part. I hope it pays off, which I'm sure it will. I hear the club were deluged with calls for corporate deals the second the gig was announced.
I think HCC has far more important things to spend ratepayers money on. If putting groups/solo singers on at the KC is such an attractive proposition why aren't the pop moguls falling over themselves to do so?
Why do HCC bother putting anything on at City Hall if they have 'far more important things to spend ratepayers money on' ? Like serving lost cause injunctions perhaps?
Because they will have a small budget to support " entertainment" in the city particularly in council owned properties. My authority has a civic theatre and the local authority does the same. Why should HCC take a gamble in supporting events that may not be profitable? As there doesn't seem to be a long queue of entrepreneurs lining up to put on numerous events I'd say they were correct. As for the Airco arena I am pleased they took the action they did, despite being unsuccessful, if only to show what a disgraceful management we have in charge of the club.
The council at Brid have done well putting on shows at the Spa for decades. Younaren'tbspendingbrstepayers money, you are making a profit for them. At least you are if you know what you are doing.
Do councils stage any gigs, I thought they were all staged by promotors who hire the venues? I quite like Hull City Hall as a venue, the last gig I went to there was Ocean Colour Scene and it was brilliant (far better than Hull Arena, which is acoustically ****e). There were some great gigs at the City Hall back in the day, The Damned particularly.
There's nothing worse the paying a fortune for a ticket to see an artist you like and the whole experience getting ruined by poor sound.
