The plus side - regarding Social Media maybe a argument it could be said it's fundamentally good as it connects us meaningfully to other people, as our happiness is very strongly influenced by our social ties? Most of us need our family and friends, so Social Media it provides us the opportunity to connect with people maybe it builds better relationships with family and friends? - some with whom we are unable to meet personally, so it lets them know about our life and take input about their lives and events happening with them. It also gives us a platform so that we all can contribute our voice to public debate, as providing our opinions has the potential to deepen our understanding of the issues of the day. Obviously Social Media allows companies and corporations to communicate with us as consumers and it is a more personalized way of providing a two-way communication channel, we can learn about a company’s products or services, and at the same time companies can learn about our consumer’s preferences and needs. The Negative side -Social media can be terribly addictive and can have the same consequences as other have additions on us, many of us look at our mobile/tablet/pc when we wake up, for instance logging into Facebook can provide our brains with a influx of dopamine, the similar effect we get from alcohol when drinking. Social media has caused, in a sense, the death of our privacy. Not only do our friends and family know everything about us, so does any company that can pay for our data. Social media has some serious repercussions on productivity, such as when we're are using social media while we are supposed to be working. Also the mistakes and errors of judgement we make on social media might cause us to be publicly shamed. So is it Is it good for us? ... as individuals? ... for society? Comical that this sort of thing crops up. It is just an absolute. It's not going anywhere, it's wormed its way into every aspect of life and won't go anywhere. It's neither good nor bad. It's just the modern norm.

Personally I despise all forms of instant media, it is easy in a drunken rage to say you want to destroy someone, as long as the recipient can laugh it off, it's dangerous stuff and a different dartboard.. The war in Northern Ireland and the Falklands would have been a lot different if this stuff had been around then..

The frightening thing is that both social media is a good source of contact but unfortunately it has become tainted or even poisoned by misusers.
For UK family updates we have to ask our NZ granddaughters since the only contact is through facebook. Nobody has a landline phone nowadays so it is factime or facebook. I'm happy with limited contact but wife isn't. I'll live.
It's like @di5co said, it's neither good or bad, in itself. It's just another tool of life in today's world. This is the only social network I'm on. I'm not on Facebook, Twitter or anything else. It's only because of my old bond to my club and my hometown that I found this forum in the first place. The only reason I stay is because of the many genuine guys on here with whom I feel a real connection. It was only a matter of time before the mags meet-up thread reappeared. There's a good reason for that.
Agree with you that it's neither good nor bad. But as a moot point, I would also say that it IS both good and bad. Maybe a pedantic thought.
Both good and bad in my opinion. I love Facebook for the way it can keep me on contact with family and friends who now live in all parts of the world. However, it can also be a dangerous tool if used irresponsibly.
I might be an arsehole but I thought people would want to see my giant ginger pussy?! I don't do twitter. i have no desire to let people know where i am and when. that's just asking for trouble imo. facebook's boring but i still use it. it's much easier to stay in contact with friends and family - free wifi calls with fb messenger and event/birthday reminders. that's about it tho. I rarely bother with status updates and holiday photos. plus i have no kids so at least i don't bore people with pics of babies and become a victim of scary anecdotes as a result. each to their own really. if you like it: use it. if you don't get it: it's not forced on you - tho a lot of places have it as primary contact now - media, politicians, celebrities etc. no doubt i'd have succumbed to many perils and pitfalls if i'd started using social media as a kid.

I know loads of Muso's with 'contracts' or had 'music industry deals' and hardly earned a living wage - it's a difficult question to answer -one day maybe if and when the Music Industry decides to pay fair a price for the royalties to musicians and to song writers and then companies like Spotify that usually pay a pittance to musicians for all their downloads, sharing and streaming, then maybe having a 'contract' might mean something, nowadays the 'song' seems less important than the gigs, marketing and merchandise, so to answer your question- I don't think social media is the main culprit for killing music it certainly can help in some ways for Independent artist - I would put the blame more on the mainstream greedy Music Industry and like of Simon Cowell
