    Random luck, during the height of the troubles most of the Infantry Batallions did multiple tours, it could have been 18 months off and 4 months on (later increased to 6 months) if you were unlucky. Engineers, Artillery and the like did far less. I only did one. It's because Infantry was our secondary role.

    My dad's uncle was a staff sergeant and I know he did at least one tour in NI. Think he was in Bosnia as well.

    On the contrary, 2 year (accompanied with family) tours were very popular, people I knew who did that loved it.

    I did a year there in the early 80's, I arrived in Londonderry at about midnight in January and woke up to see growlers of ice floating down the Foyle river. I distinctly remember thinking wtf have I got myself into now.

    It was a ****ing holiday camp compared to other places mate. Not as good as Cyprus or Belize though.

    I was out in bandit country, Aughnacloy specifically. Lovely it was, summertime too, and the locals were nice.

    The biggest drawback was the lack of sleep. I was constantly tired I recall.
