Ok. I know several of you have been in NY. I'm going to be there next week for a conference. Monday I arrive at 10am and besides checking in to hotel/registering at conference I have the whole afternoon/evening to myself. Conference normally keeps me occupied the rest of the week. :( so won't see much of NY after Monday.

Going to be near Brooklyn Bridge. Besides visiting the Carragher pub what else are the must do things in NY? (given just one day).

You should go to Manhattan - check out the usual stuff, Times Sq, Wall St, Rockerfeller Centre, Trump Towers.

One day is better than none but does leave you with having to rush around.
If I had one day I'd want to soak up the atmosphere leave the tourist bit until I had more time, visit some good bars and places to eat get a bit lost finding the places.

Have lunch in Little Italy, pretend you're a gangster.

There's a good strip club called Flashdancers. The reason I remember the name 15 years on is I had an uncomfortable moment with our FD when he went through my company credit card bill and queried whether it was a suitable establishment to be spending the company's money in. Take plenty of money as the in-house cash machine dishes out Flashdancer Dollars which can only be used in the club. That presented a problem when we were trying to get a taxi back to the hotel.

Yeah. I was planning on those things. Hotel is just over Brooklyn Bridge so I planned to walk that. Go to the World Trade Center site and then take the metro up to the times square/rockerfeller centre area.

Hopefully get some discount same-day tickets there to go see Avenue Q.

I'm not really much of a bar person... Especially when I'm by myself. My co-worker and his wife are flying up there too but I'm pretty sure they will want their own space. (I do too so I can explore unhindered).

Subways safe? Won't be leaving Brooklyn/Manhatten.

On Manhattan definitely. There's a metro station right opposite the WTC site that'll take you straight up the Times Sq.

If you've got kids nip into the M&M store just off Times Sq and take some pics for them (and buy them some as well like), it's amazing tbf

If it was me it would be all about Harlem, the Studio Museum, Strawberry Fields in Central Park and then maybe Ellis Island.

I've always had an issue paying $6 for a beer when it would cost me less than $2 at home! Especially since where I live $6 is the cost of a lunch out at many places.

Company pays my food when I'm out... But not my alcohol. :(

You're probably not into shopping but get your lovely wife a tote bag from Macy's - she'll love you for it. I'm saying this based on what female relatives have asked for as a gift from NYC.

Trivia: the Macy star was inspired by a tattoo that store founder Rowland Hussey Macy had as a remembrance from his days as a whaler when he was lost at sea and a star guided him to shore.

Thanks... Although probably won't impress the wife since we have two Macy's near my house. <laugh>

Oh silly me. <doh> That's the difference - I was thinking of bringing gifts back to England where NYC Macy's bags are iconic - or so I'm told.

Actually I think I read they have a Marks & Spencer's in NY. That might be exotic for the wife who has never been to one. <ok>

I was on the same deal as you a couple of years back and only had one day to look around. Very underwhelmed - Central Park's nice though.

Have a bite to eat in Tom's Restaurant, as featured in Suzanne Vega's song and most episodes of Seinfeld. It's not at all touristy to do that...
