Still a bit down in the dumps about the way this season is going and was reminiscing over days gone by. I was also thinking that sometimes you don't realise what you've got until it is gone and often take for granted certain eras in a club's history. How do you think Peter Reid's team would fare in the current Premier League this season ? Is it so different now to back then and where did it all go wrong ?
That team would score goals in any era mate, however they'd be dead on their feet after an hour most likely. Those were good years eh? Actually enjoying football, tearing teams apart. They knew what we were gonna do, they just couldn't stop it. Johnston, Summerbee, Hutch, 3 of my all time faves.
The midfielders could score anarl. McCann, Rae, Schwartz, Hutchinson, Reyna. We went through some good ones...
Schwarz was some boy like, keeping the ball. Reyna was superb deserved to play in a better side, we were on the decline when when he came, shame. Hutch was the man like.
I always remember Alex Ferguson saying in a radio interview that the Quinn/Philips combo was the one he feared the most as an opposing manager .. we were some force back then
Best days as a Sunderland fan in the 38 years I've been following lads. Johnstone & Summerbee on the wings, Quinn & Phillips up front, winning the championship at a canter. I don't know whether it would work today but I love the man for the memories he leaves me with.
Haha, Anyone remember we were playing Liverpool on a Sunday lunch time on On Digital.. All you hear is Reidy shout at PhilThompson '**** off big nose'. I cried like, ****ing hilarous it was, about a minute of silence in the commentary as they were clearly buckled as well. hahaha. '**** off big nose', childish but brilliant.
Mate, I've trawled and trawled the internet for it but it ain't there, was before recordable boxes and such like, you'd hope Setanta dug it out for a clip show or summat. Was a family dinner like, even my nanna was howling, haha. Brilliant.
Glad to be of service mate. Cheered myself up an arl, every time I think of it nearly 20 year on I still chuckle, haha.
Anyone remember that documentary "premier passions" .. plenty of PR and BS swearing and giving old school team talks !
Aye, and I remember the inside of Roker Park looked like a social club, ha. Class show that, all on YouTube.
It was certainly entertaining and the star was the lad who worked in the chippie or butchers. Where Peter Reid failed was he did not take players feelings into account and did not realise that stroking their ego would get better results. Yeah right!
Nail smack on the head, mate. You can treat Watford reserves like Phillips one way but once you've signed people like Scwartz who've played alongside e.g. Batistuta, he thinks 'I didn't have to take this at xxx so why should I take it at Sunderland?' I do believe that's exactly why it fell apart.
