Can't argue with that. Scholes Is one of the best centre midfielders of my lifetime, really an underrated player, people go on about lamps and the filthy scouser but Scholes was twice the player of them both.
Scholes was technically in a different universe to Fat Frank and "Stevie G". He suffered by comparison because he refused to marry an old tart & live the celebrity lifestyle that the other two non entities embraced. It always makes me laugh when I hear Mr Victimhood Stevie G proclaim his love for Liverpool - he tried to leave them twice for Chelsea and was only stopped when his family received threats.
At that time, big Pete was a world class goalkeeper. Those two have history so I can see why he was left off. There was also a time where an argument could have been made for Rio too. Easily the best ball playing centre back in the world circa 2004-2007. but whilst he might have been the best, I guess fergie could question if at that time, that was world class.
Paul Scholes was an absolute joy to behold. If he were Spanish or Brazilian people would wax lyrical about him. He's easily the best English midfielder I've ever seen and one of my favourite players of all time. It's a sorry shame that a plethora of England managers couldn't see what was right under their nose. All too often he was played out of position on the left while inferior midfielders were played in his position. This inevitably lead to him chucking it in earlier than he should have for his country. Thus robbing us the fans of an opportunity to watch a truly world class midfielder representing our country on the world stage For me Rio Ferdinand, Jap Stam and Roy Keane had a couple of seasons where I would consider them world class. However, Fergie was in a better position to judge than me I suppose.
He used to say Schmeichel was his best ever buy, so I don't know why he's not included. He was a massive presence in defence.
The season we were relegated from the Premier League me and my Dad went to the away game at Old Trafford (February 2007 I think it was) as even at that point we were confident we wouldn't get another chance for a while. Unfortunately the coach arrived 5 minutes before kick off so we never really had much time to take in the surroundings properly; we were however rewarded during the match by a fairly decent Charlton performance and the opportunity to see Paul Scholes in his natural habitat. From memory Man Utd didn't play well but everything came through Scholes; I can still recall one 40 odd yard lofted pass he did where I don't believe he even looking up beforehand, he just knew where his target was and got it there with expert efficiency. As others say though I'm surprised Schmeichel didn't make the grade; especially given how long they took to successfully replace him. But then again perhaps thats the point; they still won trophies with Bhartez and Co. I personally would have included David May.
there is a story about utd after the champions league final at Wembley, where I think Barcelona won 3-1. Xavi, iniesta and busquets did Rock Paper Scissors. What it was regarding was, who got scholes shirt.
Great story Super I think that sums up just how great he was and what high esteem he was held amongst his peers.
