How different would our world be if we had hired Roberto Martinez instead of Brendan Rodgers?

Martinez was always FSG's second choice for our managerial vacancy and was interviewed for the job prior to Rodgers appointment. Some press say Martinez was offered the job but declined because he did not like the owners vision on a transfer committee, others believe he was never offered the job.

Like Rodgers Martinez takes influence from the Tikki Takka style. His first season at Everton was impressive, but his second a bit low in comparison. But with one of the league smallest transfer budgets and a need to rely on loans Martinez was always going to find it tougher at Everton.

In Martinez I see a manager who is a lot more professional and a lot less egotistical than Rodgers. A nice guy, but also a believer in discipline.

His strengths and weaknesses seem the same as Rodgers. Good attacking, good passing, terrible defense. But Everton's defense has improved whilst ours has not under Rodgers.

Martinez has never worked with top players. But neither had Rodgers pre Liverpool. I think both Martinez and Rodgers would have got the best out of Suarez, but the worry is post Suarez.

So where would we be if Roberto Martinez was our boss?

  2. A more apt question would have been Rafa or similar of a similar standing. Martinez and Brod are one and the same.

I'd say probably the same. Only with less money spent and Kone would be playing for us.

One hard question to answer is how would Martinez be with a big transfer budget.

With our current squad I bet Martinez would love Benteke.

I think managerial style and ability they're much the same. The question is, would transfers be better?

That depends on how much the manager has a say... We don't know. Sounds like Telly was more or less pushed on him.

I suspect Martinez may have lower highs (no 2nd) but also higher lows (would learn from his mistakes better). Overall I don't predict we would average much different.

Looking at Everton Martinez's signing seem to be a lot more relevent. His squad is more streamlined and has a lot less awkward spots. The talent they have is not as good as ours as they cannot afford it. But he has used what he has a lot more efficiently.

Its hard to see where signings like Lallana actually fit into Rodgers original plan.

Martinez is a more likeable character but other than that, ability wise I don't see any difference. Oh yeah ... he got a club relegated, something BR hasn't done ...... yet <laugh>

Martinez is just as bad as Rodgers. Mid table is their level.

    We need better.

Don't think we'd be any better off. Both over achieved at clubs with little or no expectations.
We expect success and will never be happy unless we get it.
We are Liverpool.......that still means something.

    Who would your choice be?
    Realistic option....

Then also anyone in the world, who would you really love?

  14. Since I don't watch football outside the PL, no idea. But if Brod and Rubber Toe are our best options we may as well accept mediocrity for the rest of our time.

Everton wouldn't have spunked 10 years of savings on Lukaku and they'd be playing in the EL this season with a much better team that didn't include Howard in goal for them

We'd never be signing United rejects if Martinez came here, so not sure how he'd cope...

I think you'd be in much better shape, playing better football and getting better results. Martinez is a much better manager than Rodgers simply because he has a system that he works towards and recruits players for. Rodgers squad and team management is completely haphazard.

Behave. Martinez makes Rodgers' transfer record look amazing.

Alcaraz, Kone, McGeady, Eto'o, Galloway, Lukaku, Besic, Barry, Mori, Cleverley

£77m spent to drive his team towards relegation

A few good players in that list. The ten of them cost less than Markovic, Lovren, Lallana and Balotelli.

And they're above you in the league.

Martinez is tactically one dimensional and hasn't really achieved much over his career. He and Rodgers are very similar - difference is, Martinez is at his level and Rodgers isn't.
