A preacher in St Andrews was preaching against same sex marriages using a loudspeaker. A local decided to shut him up in a traditional Scottish way

Being against same sex marriage doesn't make you a bigot btw. Loads of gay people are against it themselves, are they bigots?

Edit: from the OP the story was unclear [as was what the man was 'preaching'] I've since looked up the story and it isn't about same sex marriage, it's a loon hate preaching anti-muslim and anti-gay so yes he does appear to be a bigot and well done the young piper.

    They are?

I think the vast majority want the right to marriage even if they themselves don't intend to marry.

That's just talking about a few exceptions to the rule. No numbers on how many. I'd be surprised if anything close to a large % of them were against it.

You could probably find a few Liverpool fans who say they don't want Liverpool to win the league. There won't be many... But I bet there are some who have some strange reasons.

I don't really know percentages, how would you ever go about finding out something like that anyway? This was a topic of conversation a while ago and I remember googling it and finding a few twitter and facebook pages - gays against gay marriage, which surprised me.

Are you equating those Liverpool fans with the gays who are against same sex marriage as having strange reasons for doing so? Surely there's as many different views on it amongst gays as there are amongst non-gays.

My point was there are exceptions to every rule. I doubt gays who are against legalizing gay marriage are in any sort of majority or even sizable minority.

My [original] point was, are gays who are against same sex marriage also bigots or is that term reserved for non-gays - not a question aimed at you I hasten to add, <ok>

I think it depends on which ones and what their reasoning is.

The ones that are against it for religious reasons are biggots. The ones that are against it because it is heteronormative are biggots.

Hating ones own group doesn't make one less of a biggot. If a gay politician attacks gays they are a biggot.

History is full of Jewish people who tried to hide their Jewishness and assaulted Jews. There are several white supremacists who followed this path... And no one would doubt their biggotry.

So, yes, I would say gays who don't think gays should be allowed marriage are most likely biggots. I'd want to see their reasoning first. There might be a legitimate reason there somewhere.

Often when a subgroup is targeted their worst prosecutors are from fellow members of that subgroup.

It purely depends on the motive of the person who opposes it.

Most straights who are vehemently opposed to gay marriage are doing so from the stand point of bigotry and small mindedness and not from the standpoint of not wanting to conform to straight traditions, which is largely the view from the gays who aren't keen.

You don't have to hate a group of people to disagree with them.

If someone doesn't agree with gay marriage, it isn't always coming from a place of hate. Religious people are just as entitled to their views as anyone else. If some are citing the Bible as a reference to claim it's wrong, while I wouldn't do it myself, I don't have a problem with that, as long as they're not using the Bible to claim one group of people are better than another or actually acting hatefully, or inciting hatred based on it. There's some right nutters out there who are bigots but just by being religious and holding opinions that go against what's currently PC, doesn't necessarily make someone a bigot.

Religiously inspired political views drove the Civil Rights movement in the 60's winning equal rights for blacks, so religion does, and has, played a part in law making. Like with most things, it's the extremists that present a problem and refusing gays an equal share in society based on what some believe the Bible says, is wrong. The Bible is open to interpretation which is why Christians don't all agree with each other on same sex marriage [as well as many other things].
