    lol actually read article now

Robson says the key is to buy a club on the cheap, win promotion and then sell within a few years.

He adds on the programme: 'Build it up from nothing and say it was worth £3million when you bought it and now you can sell it for £150m - that's great business by you.'

    ------

i dont see why thats illegal? buy a business at the bottom, when a huge windfall comes in sell at the maximum profit? you still take the risk that the club may not get promoted?

will read the rest in a min

Don't know about calling it an attempt to create a "cartel" but there are definitely some dodgy things going on here.

Looking forward to watching this later, and the subsequent wum-infected threads it will create across these boards tomorrow!

It can only be a true cartel if the two companies (clubs in football terms) can be shown to have conspired to influence results and outcomes for their benefit. But it would be a breach of FA regulations if the two clubs were ultimately owned by the same person. It'd be like Tesco buying Sainsbury's through a hidden fund in an attempt to bypass competition rules.

Although I doubt the FA can or will do anything, after all London Nominees have only told these reporters how you could break the rules, they haven't actually done it. I know how to rob a bank, that doesn't mean I can be arrested for telling my mates about it down the pub. All I can see that can come out of this is:

    a) Embarrassment for Robson and the rest of LN
    b) Embarrassment for the FA that yet another one of their rules is so flimsy and easy to overcome

    Oh I can't wait :)

    You're right.
Tesco can't buy Sainsburys as they are in the same retail market. They would hold a sort of ''monopoly'' which isn't allowed.
However they could buy out Marks and Spencers.Marks and Spencers aren't in the same market.

Well this isn't surprising realy. We all know football is bent as hell.

One thing I would say though is these stings in themselves are dodgy. I doubt this is the full picture.

Tesco probably couldn't buy M&S to be honest. Tesco has too large a share of the food market, and also a pretty large share of the clothes market. I doubt the Competition Commission would let them merge, particularly given the CC's conclusions about Tesco's market power. Anyway that's a different (and far less interesting) debate! ;)

There isn't a Monopolies and Mergers Commission anymore, there's only the Competition Commission. Not sure why there should be more than one - its role is to keep competition levels in the UK high, and you only really need one body to do that.

Do some research on something called ''The wheel of retailing''.
Marks and Spencers are in a completely different retail market to Tesco.Marks and Spencers are top tier retailers, high cost...high quality. They exist in Ireland and have one competitor...its called Super-Quinn.However Super-Quinn are able to compete with them although smaller as Super-Quinn found a niche in their belief in customer service.
The second teir is generic and this is where Tesco fit in,they have lots of competition.
The last tier is ''low cost no frills'' ie Lidl and Aldi in retail and Ryanair and Easy-jet in Air-lines.
As I said,Tesco could buy out Marks and Spencers.
    Thus not creating a cartel.

Pretty sure the Glazers have taken relatively little from the club and about the same if not less than if we were a PLC still.

Right on the rest of it though.
