Left winger no competition for us older Hornets has to be Sir John Barnes. The best player I have seen in a Watford Shirt. What would he be worth in todays price figures £40 Million would not be out of touch. Simply Brilliant and a joy to watch. I saw his debut against Norwich and my old man said look at this lad coming on a sub he is supposed to be a bit special.

He certainly was from that game on John Barnes became a hornet legend.

So thats that then, It seems like a landslide for Barnes and I am happy to move onto centre midfield. (FYI, I consider left midfield to be what other's may call wide left or left wing! Always considered it to be left midfield rightly or wrongly, Barnes was always considered a left winger / midfielder IMO and not a striker as others may have suggested)

Tried to say this yesterday but was having problems with the forum/broadband/browser/whatever it was.
For the benefit of younger Horns, in the Barnes /Callaghan team of the 80's we effectively played 4-2-4. This meant that the 2 midfield players (LM and RM as Elixir says) had to be superfit and adept at breaking up opposition attacks, getting to the knock downs etc and sending it forward immediately, into channels and spaces where they knew the forwards would be making the runs. People called it kick and rush, hit and hope etc but it was highly effective and not at all random. Unlike Aidy's hoofball seemed to be.

When I were a lad, some time before those glory days, I always used to set up my Subbutteo teams 4-2-4. Nos. 2-5-6-3 across the back, 4 & 8 midfield, 7-9-10-11 up front. Infallible.

Yes, I think I sometimes played 4 and 10 in midfield as well.

Finally sold my Subbuteo last year! And my Subbuteo cricket. Got quite a good price, but was told all my carefully painted numbers on the bases/shirt backs reduced their value. No idea really why I kept them so long.
