Agreed total respect to those who understand what is going on and I will try and watch a bit to see if i can understand the game a bit more Apologies to our community who are enjoying this. My fascination was the fact that I witnessed so many people at work talking about this ... it's on trend and so far I sense a real attempt by lost people to in some way try and own this event for themselves. I am not clear what they get from this but it's without doubt a nation epidemic and I do feel for the real fans of this sport and how the UK media has yet again made a Live Aid / Glasonbury / Children in need thing about a sport that has a traditional toff following. I am certain that no one really understands the complexities of this sport in regards of the evolution of rule changes To me turning on it was a shock and chaos What i cannot stand is how corporations, advertising and general commerce feels the needs to align themselves with this product? I myself was involved in the recent launch of the All Blacks boots from Addias but even then I had no idea how marketed this event had become On the upside i see people enjoying themselves in the entertainment and that in essence is a good thing. I hope the Irish win because they are far better people than us English I am looking forward to returning to France Friday to see how that culture is handling it ... I pray it can't be anything like i saw in 15 mins of ITV I am not a stick in the mud just a old git who has been saturated by the media and is upset by the slide in the UK's culture I sincerely hope people get vast enjoyment out of the RWC I also hope that people understand what is making their enjoyment but question is it real?
Why are people making a big thing about it? Why are corporations getting involved with it? It's world cup! Fans from all over the world have come. There have been more tickets sold than for any previous rugby world cup. This is an opportunity to get more interest at grass roots level so that it isn't just a game "for toffs" as you describe it.
I understand what you're saying in parts DT. I went through a similar phase. I used to play for the school team in the late 70's early 80's but the game has moved on since then. There was a period when I stopped watching rugby as I didn't have a clue as to what was going on. There were so many fussy little rules introduced. When I transferred to another station there were four rugby players on the watch. I sat down and watched it with them and they explained everything that was happening and why. This opened up the sport to me again and it's become so much more enjoyable to watch. If you have the time or inclination I would suggest you do the same if you can. Having an understanding of the tactics and nuances of rugby opens up a whole new sport to enjoy. I think the same can be said for any sport that you're unfamiliar with though in fairness. Whether that's Cricket, Baseball or American Football.

Excellent display from Japan against the Springboks, who seem stuffed with players who have been around for years, and have only won once this year, very one dimensional. Only half an hour gone. 19-19 after 53 minutes, SA giving penalties away all the time. Eddie Jones' game plan outstanding. 22-22 60 minutes, why SA haven't had at least one yellow card for persistently giving away penalties is a mystery. Balls, SA try. Pub quiz answer - a 'try' comes from the original rule that you had to get the ball over the line to have a 'try' at scoring a point through a kick at the posts. Glorious try from Japan, superb conversion, 29-29 10 minutes to go. The only point in watching any game at this stage of the tournament is the hope that one of the big teams will get rolled over. Fiji let us down yesterday, good on Japan today...
I'm so glad I decided to stick with the Murray's in a great Davis Cup doubles win, skip the Ireland game and watch this one. It was riveting.
I managed to fit in the end of the cricket too, with Gloucestershire bowling out Surrey in the last over. A brilliant afternoon of TV sport.
