Problem is, Brod clearly doesn't trust him at LB. Why else switch to a back three last night? Can't be because he doesn't trust Gomez at RB after playing him LB! Playing three at the back meant Ibe was forced out of position.
In fairness, that's because he's got eyes in his head. Moreno is a poor defender, as he proved last season. Wing back fine, but he consistently exposed in a back 4.
No argument there tbf. But then, Brod needs to accept that Moreno needs coaching and he's not the man to do it. I'd rather Moreno play LB with Gomez CB and Lovren out the team though. We need to re-grow our bollox and start attacking sides again, Moreno can help with that.
The problem is, that when he played in that role last season, because he was positionally poor and often got caught in an advanced position, teams sought to exploit the weakness and got in behind him. If you're going to play with both full backs bombing on, you've got to play with 2 holding players imo, as a large part of their role is to cover the fullback areas when they're pushed on. You couldn't play Clynne and Moreno without having say Can and Lucas sat in a 4-2-3-1 imo.
I agree. You'd think he had a 'mare last night the way some people are talking. We know he's limited, but why get on his back all the time?
I think a diamond with Lucas, Hendo and Milner (Can could replace any of them) with Coutinho ahead would offer enough protection. Lucas as the dedicated protector but Hendo, Milner and/or Can can all help out too, just don't allow both to go forward together. Nor would I tell Clyne and Moreno to bomb forward every time. They need to pick and chose when to go and when to stay. going every time makes it predictable and easy to play against.
Not sure if anyone else picked up on it but Sakho was constantly talking to Moreno, Gomez and the two youngsters in midfield. This guy is a leader. Make him captain instead of Milner the boy scout.
Moreno needs to be playing left back instead of Gomez. Gomez is talented and I rather we give him games at RCB next to Sakho. Gomez was partially at fault for the goal but I rather he develop and learn on the job, than continue with Skrtel who will make mistakes anyways. And Moreno only ever seems to be poor when he's not playing next to Sakho. and he's played very well in his recent cameos since being dropped. Rodgers talks about character and these two guys are the few who actually show it.
We were better with Sakho in defence, but it was still a stupid error that led to their goal! More work needs to be done there, but I may as well beg for the moon. Hope Sakho starts against Norwich, I'm sorry but Lovren is gash and Sakho is a better defender. Please that Lallana scored, though and I thought Rossiter did all right. Aside from that, the first half was piss poor boring; more end-to-end second half, mostly ours...
Gomez, Can and Brannagan were at fault for the goal but they're all young players so they will make mistakes. As I mentioned previously, I rather give talented youngsters more minutes and accept that they will make mistakes and learn on the jobs, than persist with Skrtel or Lovren who will make mistakes any way and have no scope for improvement. Once Toure went off, our defence did improve. It was still shaky but better than usual. Skrtel drags that line so deep and it needs to stop.
