MP talking about harrowing call to Luke. He has a long road ahead...needs to get all the tears out of his system (this is the way some people cope) and move on. Tougher for a sportsman than for others with broken legs as he must maintain fitness, but on the other hand he will get far better treatment and more support than we would. He's a young lad who needs entertainment, so I hope all his friends rally round. Got to keep off the booze and burgers.

Interested to see if people thought it was a red card offence. Have to say I didn't....it was a hard tackle, sure, but it was just an unfortunate course of events for me.

Either way, best wishes to the lad. Hope he can get his mind right to push through this recovery period.

Yes, I commented earlier about it [read up the thread]. I was undecided. It was a ferocious tackle and Moreno got the ball, but there might be a case for over commitment. Suffice to say that, on another day, a defender might just sneeze in the attacker's direction and be penalised. It's all very inconsistent.

Ah yes, sorry, my attendance on here has been intermittent for the last week or so, so I've missed a lot of stuff! Interesting debate.

Apparently Luke's studs got caught...otherwise he may have got away with it. An injury can be a symptom of a bad tackle, but it isn't proof. You can and should get a red card if your tackle is dangerous even if the other player leaps out of the way.

I've only seen it from one angle and my first thought was 'heavy' not dangerous. I haven't seen other angles or slow motion replays.

My thought too - If Ryan gets fit quickly and plays as well as we all know he can, he should be a certainty for the 2016 squad (and team)! Bad luck for Luke, but his time will come .........

Was having a chat with some friends the other evening and one of them made the comment that Luke might have been able to get out of the way, but, perhaps, his lack of experience of "heavy tackles" meant he didn't think of it. When we challenged him to further explain, he said to remember that Luke never played at League 1 or Championship level, but came straight into the team in the PL where, maybe, the challenges aren't quite so "agricultural". I thought it an interesting point - do you think because he was "coddled" a little in the academy he wasn't as aware as he could have been? My friend likened the challenge to the one on Matt Targett in the Newcastle game where, thankfully, he jumped and avoided contact. But Matt has had the same route to the first team as Luke, hasn't he?
I just thought it an interesting point and would love the opinion of you "experts" out there!! :emoticon-0105-wink:

Maybe that's why Nathanial Clyne never seems to have big enough studs... Not being flippant, genuine thought.

Borderline between red and yellow for me. No malice but to me just a stupid and reckless enough play that it needs to be strongly discouraged.

I'm harsh on that stuff so personally I would give a red, but I wouldn't have complained if it had been yellow. And I do not consider it a dirty tackle.

I think you're friend never played the game :)

Shaw was on a run at pace through other players and was caught from the side. He had no chance.

Most players trying to avoid tackles get hurt.

Van Gaal saying that Luke is in a stronger more positive mood now. Some people (and I know I am one) have a brief breakdown and tears in a crisis, but quickly get through it and move on...perhaps Luke is one of those. Better that than stretch it out and waste mental energy he could use to get better....after all Luke cannot afford to waste mental energy :)

You're right - he's a long term supporter but not a player. Thanks - figured you'd have the experience :emoticon-0105-wink:
