Just had an e mail from the petition organisers saying the Council are refusing to rule out filling it in! Is that right?

If it's still up for discussion, they're not allowed to rule anything out.

They are beyond stupid if they do. This City lost enough of it's history when it was flattened, here we have some history and the Council want to perform what can only be described as outright vandalism if they continue with this ridiculous idea.

That is a sight of national importance. Filling it in would be akin to vandalism.
You can't help thinking that elsewhere, France for example, that it would be done up and presented as a major historical attraction.

They may well not want to fill it in. The point is that they can't publicly pre - judge the discussion, no matter what their preferred outcome.

    No local authority can.

In other countries a site of this historical importance would have been done up by national government and not left to,a local council.

Some maybe, but certainly not all. It's academic anyway, as we're in this Country.

Fortunately the uproar may have swayed any of those culturally insensitive enough to consider filling it in.
Really it should be done up as a focal point for 2017. Any visitors to Hull from home and abroad could be shown it and told that their life in a Parliamentary democracy was made possible because of what occurred at that spot.

Maybe an idea on the anniversary of Charlie being told to do one out of our fair City that if one of those clubs that like to dress up and re-enact stuff could well re-enact it. Would be good esp during the City of Culture. Make it a big event.

Yes, we are in this country. And sometimes you have to despair. As I said other countries would have had national government involved in the preservation of a site of that historical importance. Which is a criticism of national government not local.

I'm not convinced media frenzies or petitions cut that much ice over persuasive, factual argument. The scheme will have to be decided via the approved procedure.

It should be protected and listed - that would stop all this nonsense.

It could actually cause more problems than it resolves, as listing it could well limit future schemes.

Yeah I agree, however we are sadly, where we are.

I bet you could sell it to some yanks who would ship it, build it back up and give it the dignity and respect it surely deserves.

    Sad really.

I'm not really bothered about future schemes. This is important - you wouldn't get York knocking down a section of City walls to accommodate a drive through McDonalds - this notion of filling in Beverleygate is just as bad.

If the yanks are after buying holes in the ground, I've got loads available, once I've removed the protective coating of soil that's covering them right now.

The history is the act that occurred there. The remains of the gate are physical display of where it was.

I'm all in favour of protecting our heritage, but each individual case needs to be viewed in conjunction with others. Any works there will impact on the other buildings around it, which are historic on their own right.

It can't be viewed in isolation if the right decision is going to be made. You seem hung up on just one possible outcome, rather than looking at others that are being considered. Plenty have complained about just being a hole, so there's a desire to do 'something'.

What's needed are ideas, not simply a fight to reject one extreme option that was always unlikely to go ahead anyway.

There's loads of ideas that have been put forward in this thread. It really shouldn't even be up for discussion. Why is it currently a 'hole'? That's because they did a **** job the first time around.

I'm not hung up on one outcome, this was more than likely the only option the thickies at HCC were looking at until it was brought to the attention of the general public.

Seriously, do you work for HCC because you seem far too protective and easily offended by criticism of them?

If it does have an impact on other areas, I can only see it as a positive impact.

Not sure if anyone has ever been but they do a fantastic light show at the Tower of David in Jerusalem about the history of the city and it's key moments up to present day. Surely we could do something all be it on a smaller scale for the Beverley Gate, even if its for a couple of weekends a year in the summer. I would encourage the council to consider re-landscaping the area back towards Queen Victoria Square to give better access to the 'gate' and allow people to pass through on the way down Whitefriargate. Its a key part of our history and whether they mock up some doors and rebuild part of the gate in co-ordination with the college building side and the uni archaeology team then it can and should be done. Is the old Burtons still occupied or is it empty.
