Anheuser-Busch Inbev to make takeover bid for SAB-Miller http://www.wsj.com/articles/sabmiller-gets-takeover-approach-from-anheuser-busch-inbev-1442395363
I don't see how that would ever be allowed. They would monopolise the global beer market. There'd only be Heineken, Molson Coors and Carlsberg and a load of regional breweries/micro breweries left. They'd have 74% of the USA market and 30% of the global market. I just can't see it happening.
The only reason anyone drinks either of them is pong or bongs off the roof with a garden hose anyway. Either way you are lucky if they taste like piss. Its not like they can make them taste worse.
Me neither. Even though both companies have been loosing market share in the US for years (which is why they have been buying up micro breweries as fast as they can) it would clearly constitute a violation of US Anti-Trust legislation and the merger wouldnt be allowed.
Piss to get pissier? I tell you what, here in Denmark it is all piss. That's why I began brewing my own pale ale years ago. In the meantime it has become increasingly difficult if not impossible for home brewers to obtain a high class ale yeast. No matter how I try there is always suspended yeast in the finished article and it is yuck. You have to add gelatin or other finings to clear it, and that also spoils the end result in my view. Do you know what I think? These huge breweries are sloppy. They kill the beer, they gas it like coca cola, and they filter it. They can't be bothered to cultivate classy yeasts; and consequently the stuff being passed off as home brew ale yeast is little better than baker's yeast. The vigorous fermentation and huge head of foam gives it away. Compare to a good wine yeast. I use Vintner's Harvest yeasts, and there is hardly a head of foam at all. The wine clears quickly and is excellent. Speaking of which this year's cherries and plums are ready to taste. In any case, for the home brewer country wines are by far the cheapest thing around. You get five gallons of excellent wine for the cost of seven kilos of sugar plus three quid for yeast and sundries. Long live my plum tree! Cheers.
Lived in Denmark in the 80's. There was a beer then called, I think, FaxeFad which was slightly less crap than tuborg/heineken. Is it still on the go?
Fadøl is keg beer. I don't go into bars any more so I can't say if Faxe fadøl is still available. Faxe is no longer independent. It is part of Royal Unibrew who aspire to the same international status as Carlsberg. Tinned Faxe used to be sold in shops, but I don't see it any more. It is all Krudtugle or Hof. Actually the traditional pilsner you must remember no longer fills the shelves so much. There have come microbreweries selling speciality beers, most of which are uninteresting. You can hardly get a 500 ml bottle for under three quid plus deposit on the bottle. I'm sticking to my plum wine from now on.
Krudtugle - That's a great name for a beer. I think from the Assem Allam school of marketing we should launch it in the UK with a shortened name of 'Krud'. Please can I have a pint of 'Krud'? - That'll work well!
The bigger beer boys are now buying up successful micro breweries. Sharps brewery in Rock, Cornwall was bought by Molson Coors in 2011. They'd only been on the go since '94 and had managed to get 'Doom Bar' bottled ale into the Top 5 bottled ales in the UK. It's enjoying huge year on year growth.
Was in the Cotswolds recently. Anyone who likes cider wants to try No Brainer Cider from the Cotswold Cider Company( the No Brainer refers to choosing it above others, not its effect though it is 6%). I wish it was sold around here.
I can drink cider likes it's water but 99% of beers, largers, bitters, ales etc. I cannot drink at all. The only beer I can drink is of the gueze/lambic variety. All others seem to have an element which is completely at odds with my system, I can barely sip any others! Any ideas why - I've always assumed I must be allergic to something in them.
For all you Cider lovers - There's a cider company in Cornwall. Healey's they make Rattler amongst others pretty nice it is too. I'm also partial to Aspalls Premier Cru Cyder - Suffolk made. It's a really nice drink. I used to work in the Cider industry about 10 years ago. Much prefer it to Lager/Beer.
The Swedish ciders Kopparberg and Rekorderlig are nice and there are loads of different flavours for both. Strongbow Dark Fruit is also a decent drink. Cider in general is just easy to drink because it's sweet.
I just like plain Apple cider. It's a really interesting industry and I really enjoyed working in it. Had the opportunity a few years ago to get back into it and followed my head rather than my heart. Still, didn't turn out so bad
Krudtugle (pronounced crut ool) literally means gunpowder owl, an energetic person. You can always tell when Danes have had too much krudtugle ... they make spelling mistakes. They keep crossing out their os, and you get ø. Anyway, krudtugle tastes how I imagine owl piss would taste. While I am at it, there are plenty of words common to Danish and English. Piss for example (though in Danish it has just one s) and snot.
