No-one deserves that. Get well soon and speak to Jay about how to keep your mind on your recovery.

I've looked at the challenge for the first time, just to see what it was about. You can look at it two ways. It was a huge successful tackle, which unfortunately Shaw got hit with as well, or you can see it as a horrible tackle which should have resulted in a penalty. It's very difficult trying to concentrate on the tackle and not get distracted by the injury. Suffice to say, the referee saw little wrong, which is a little strange because I thought players got penalised these days for two footed tackles and over-commitment, and that was both, on first viewing.

On Shaw's form, yes he has finally been showing the stuff that he would do for Saints and made him a £30M odd signing.

I understand what you are saying, he did get the ball but for me it was reckless and out of control, which I believe is a red card by the book? (not 100% sure)

Reckless is a yellow card by the law, out of control is a red. Tackles that warrant a red card are: using excessive force, out of control and puts a player's safety in danger. Those are the three main guidelines which define serious foul play.

Things became more difficult for referees when they had to start interpreting the laws of the game, because there started to be grey areas. Offside is bad enough, but time was when it clear what a foul tackle was. If the tackler was clearly trying to get the ball and achieved it, it didn't really matter what happened to the player who had been dispossessed. Nowadays it's more about the amount of contact, even if it is a fair tackle.

EDIT: Tom has explained it above.

Injury doesn't necessarily mean an offence, just as no injury doesn't mean it isn't an offence. Haven't seen it, so have no idea. Will it be looked at retrospectively?

Referee didn't even see a foul, Tom. Not that I want to favour ManU, but by your explanation it was at least a penalty, due to excessive force.

    Cheers <ok>

Even so, by the above definition, that was a red card for me.

Devastating injury for Shaw. I am sure JRod will give him loads of support. The club has been class with their tweet and Shaw as well for his response. Never forget where you come from.

I haven't seen the incident so can't comment but it does sound like the referee missed a bad foul.

There was one thing of note. If referees miss something in an important situation like that, the commentators tend to make a song and dance about it. They didn't in this case.

Luke had surgery last night and is to stay in hospital to recover from that before going back to Manchester.

This is very sad. I never had any grudge over Luke leaving and despite his misfiring first season, was starting to look like the player we know he can be this season.

It's a shame for Luke, a shame for England and a shame for those of us who take pride in the quality youngsters we can produce.

    Stay strong Luke.

I had a grudge against him leaving as he was so young and could have given us some more years.

But it is a horrible thing to happen to a footballer, and it turns out it did hit me as hard as if he was still one of our own. The fact he is young though will give him a higher chance of coming back stronger.

At least it takes away the decision when he next plays for England again. I'll be cheering his return with everyone else.

Good luck - it's hard enough to get the Chapel to sing even one syllable. :)

There should be a sign above the chapel exit "Thak you for visiting the Chapel. Now you know what it's like to be dead."

What ever happened to that full back we sold to Arsenal a few years ago?
