Iâm a bit puzzled by the views often expressed (by the majority I think) that weâll sign some big name striker in this transfer window. Weâve got Gyan, Whickham, and Mr Ji as strikers with Campbell on the sidelines (and Tounkara with the squad in Germany). In addition, Bruce is on record as saying, when he is looking at the balance of the squad, that he includes Sess among the strikers. Very few top teams often play 2 strikers with 4-3-3 or some variation of 4-5-1 being the most used. Given this I canât see why the club would go out and spend a lot of money on another striker. Itâs not just the transfer fees commanded by established goal scorers but the wages such a player would demand. Unless itâs somebody from a lesser league (who would be exactly the same sort of gamble as Whickham and Ji) I donât personally think we need, or can afford yet another striker, particularly a marquee name. ...but what do I know.
Could be right mate... just think people are reading from Quinn's "We will replace bent" comments from Jan time.
It'll take Wickham and Dong a bit to settle into the Prem, so we've got Gyan and Sess as Campbell's injury is a bad one. I'd like another striker so that we can play an experienced front two with Sess just behind them.
Something tells me we might have a loanee lined up. Possibly keeping the cash free for a left sided midfielder?
We will sign another striker, Bruce isnt stupid. He will be waiting for the big clubs to make their moves etc and thats when quality become available
all of the above scenarios are valid, so we will have to wait for it to happen, lets face it he wont be caught with his pants down again, or hes out.
It could be OK or it may all go arse over elbow..not having good back-up strikers cost us last season and as I have not got a clue how finances are (they would improve if we could ship a couple off the wage bill) I do not know how much cash is available. It seems Insomnia is nor coming so more wonga should be there for another experienced striker would IMHO be a wise addition. The two young lads we have brought in will need time to settle and should be introduced gradually if we are to get the best out of them over the next couple of seasons.
Tounkara is a french striker we signed after a trial period in the reserves. We loaned him to Oldham last season. He scored 7goals in 44games for them.
Think we found him under an Arsenal gooseberry bush after the stork dropped him , apparently dropped from their youth team and we signed him for a year
Are we just being a little over sentimental about bringing Welbeck back? While I think he was great last year would a loan deal for Sturridge not be better at the end of the day? Very comfortable playing in a front 3 as shown for Bolton and England U21's. Would solve the left hand side problem as well. Sturridge -- Gyan -- Sess with a tighter 3 behind with at least one good ball distributer ( Gardner )
I find myself agreeing with this, maybe a striker on loan. IMO Wickham will play a bigger part from the off, than what many expect him to. He's 18 hardly the youngest to step into the prem. 6' 2" built like a brick ****house, Bruce has not payed that kind of money for him to be a wallflower. Time will tell.
We have played an awful lot of money for who many experts regard as one of the most promising strikers in the land: so does he not count?
Yes of course Wickham counts and I guess he will be ahead of Dong in the pecking order, however if we have the cash (that might mean shipping out the non-squad members, there are at least 3 Killgallon, Noz, Ringo to name but three) then either an existing or european experienced striker would give us a better squad from the off. Personally I do not like Veramin Defoe, but Bendtner would be good but there are others probably better value in Germany etc and although I am not SBs biggest fan, credit where it is due he scouts worldwide. My worry atm is there is no media noise (twits?) about who we may be after, It may be of course some of the 'big' clubs need to start the merry-go-round and we will pick up somebody who is thrown out when the dust settles. Personally my view is that if Insomnia is too expensive leave him alone.
lol indeed but extremely valid (other than the one word bit!!) - I wouldn't fancy a month with only Ji Dong Won and Connor Wickham (all due respect to both players who look excellent signings but with no PL experience) - We do, IMO, need another striker before the ACN or ANC or whatever it's called as they need time to gel with the side, particularly if they're from overseas. Just thank god Benin aren't going to qualify
I think we have been spoilt with this mass influx of new players, and everyone is jumping the gun.. We have far exceeded what we thought we would have at this stage, and SB will be working on his final pieces of the jigsaw.. Still reckon a left sided player and a loanee striker or two, will come in.
