Natty. No debate on the brogues, though I do like a good dealer boot too. Recently I have opted for braces (nothing vulgar, just black) when wearing a suit, though I really need some trousers with proper braces buttons. This is obviously a gut cloaking manouevre. And I really like very slim, ultra light watches, so I favour the Skagen (of Denmark, naturally). Good luck with the blagging. I assume you will be sporting double cuffs with discreet cufflinks? Sb ............. Keating would have to go down as the most despised PM, well, apart from old 'sour tits' Gillard that is. I've never voted for Hawke but he would be the most likable PM we've ever had. He like both his drink and his women, not necessarily in that order, very much and all Aussies saw him as being pretty much genuine overall. Turnbell is streets ahead of Abbott in both charisma and brain. Poor old Abbott was always seen as trying to smile, trying to be everyone friend, trying to make things happen but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
I suspect Keating was fun to look at from afar due to his colourful and creative use of language to wound, rather than actually have as your PM. Meanwhile, the conviction politician, a man of iron principles, Jezza Corbyn, has not only worn a tie but has agreed to go down on bended knee and kiss the Queen's hand to become a member of the Privy Council. That will not impress his 259,000 fans (I am beginning to wonder if this is the sum total of people who would vote for him at a general election, although there is probably a residual loyalty to the name Labour) and simultaneously pissed off his union supporters by his choice of Shadow Chancellor. This man wants to 'overthrow capitalism' nothing that has never been achieved through democratic means. Because, of course, the vast majority of people don't want to 'overthrow capitalism', they want to benefit from it. Just heard Frank Field on the radio, talking for labour because no one from the shadow cabinet was available to talk about the welfare debate. Field is a mystifying figure. He talks really well, but none of his ideas have ever worked and is very difficult to distinguish from a one nation Tory.

Personally, I don't see the use for nuclear weapons any more - they're a relic from a different era - it'd hardly a deterrant to ISIS, who are all willing to die for their cause. I would much rather the money be used on beefing up our conventional forces, supplying them with state-of-the-art equipment in order to protect the nation adequately, whilst still being able to help out in overseas situations. The rest of the Trident money could then be spent on the NHS and education. The refugee situation seems to be coming to a critical point now that Europe is starting to close its borders. Corbyn will flop at the next election, unless he backs down from his far left principles, and there is now no credible opposition to Cameron et al, so it'll be Tory government for at least the next two terms - not what everyone wants, but sure it'll keep some happy!
Seriously???????!!!!!!!!!!!! So, if you are paid a salary on PAYE ( like the majority of the working population in this country) you have zero say as to where or how your tax contribution is apportioned irrespective of your personal stance or preferences. However, if you are very wealthy and send your offspring to Eton you can make sizeable "donations" to your fav public school thus off setting your tax contribution and ergo CHOOSING where a portion of your tax goes ........................but only if you are wealthy enough to do so. So, a small group of people can chose to continue to finance and support their own insular community whilst still enjoying the benefits of all the public services etc that the rest of us contribute towards arbitrarily. And you think that that's a good thing! Big picture my friend! Sychophantic, no?!
Sadly Steel, this is one of the biggest failings, in my opinion of the left wing ( of which I am more prone to be ) in that they lack a very simple and basic understanding in that the reason we have had no use thus far of our nuclear weapons is because of the fact that we have them. Once the knowledge existed we could never return to a pre-nuclear weapons system defence base. If other countries have them, we must have them and as sad as this statement makes me it is, i'm afraid the status quo now. Anything less would be extremely foolhardy.
Also, Aqualung.................i would refer you to the dictionary definition of the word "charity" and ask you how on earth Eton and its ilk can fall within the boundaries of being "in need"?

Pils, I have no interest in your debate with Aqualung (indeed I choose not to see his side of the argument) but as a point of fact private school fees are paid out of already taxed income. I should know, I've paid the ****ers for long enough. It is the schools themselves that don't pay tax on their profits/surpluses, which should I suppose be reinvested. So I make a decision (as a PAYE employee) to spend part (at one point most) of my take home pay on my kids' education. As I said above I regret having to do this, but it's a quality call. I would much prefer it if the state schools in my area were of a similar standard to those I benefitted from and private schooling was redundant. But it could easily be argued that I am saving the state money by not using state services and also contributing to others in that I don't use the portion of my tax 'donation' earmarked for education - so other people's kids get my dosh. Fine with me, it's my choice. Also, as Wats pointed out, not only do private schools have pretty tough entrance requirements, they compete on results. Pure cash doesn't get you in to the good ones anymore, they need bright kids who will get good results, but of course there are plenty of places that do cater for rich, thick kids, just like most of them did in the 60's and before. Of course, those who have been trained from an early age to take the entrance exams have an advantage. Having said all that, I would have no problem with them losing charitable status. Fees would go up, scholarships would disappear, some parents would no longer be able to afford to send their kids privately (I think the vast majority are people who make considerable sacrifices to pay these bills) and the pressure would rise on state schools. But they are not charities in my view. Exactly the same arguments apply to private healthcare, except that this system also subsidies many NHS hospital doctors salaries, and many would go to Australia or elsewhere (where the salaries are much higher), if they didn't have this income stream. So how is Jezza going to make state education better?
