I think its mostly right. The first problem we have is that we need to have two or three really excellent players to build a team around and we can't afford to buy them so we have to develop them. The second problem is that if we do develop them then one of the top CL clubs will make us a ridiculous offer for them, and the players are likely to want to go. This may still happen again and the only sensible thing we can do under those circumstances is to get the biggest amount possible and spend it on three or four players hoping that one of them will be the top class replacement that we need. Looked at that way, spending the Bale money was not such a disaster. It was essentially spent on Eriksen, Paulinho, Chadli, Lamela and Soldado, one of which was bad failure, on a failure, one a success, one a good squad player and who knows how Lamela will turn out.
Its a good article, with points well made. Does it smack of a lack of ambition from the club, or is it necessary in the current market conditions to temper ambition with a healthy dose of pragmatism? Ultimately, I fear we will only truly know the answer once the dust has settled, in 10 or even 20 years time.
The audio interview is the better of the two links. Much more detail. Great insights. Lyall knows his stuff. Good explanation as to why we have been very particular about who comes in and who left. It's about much more than the job on the pitch. Also explains how our new scouting team are very highly regarded for their methods. I think the second link is the article that he refers to in the audio. If they can unearth young gems like Mahrez, then I'm all for seeing what they can do.
I listened to the audio when I had a bit more time and as you say - a very good insight from someone who seems to know what they are talking about. If you accept it as gospel it explains a lot.
