There was a very good covering of grass. There always is at Longchamp. I do not think they ever cut it short. I actually think that Sunday’s going may have been pretty false. As I said after the first race – the sprint run on the straight right-to-left course – the runners had kicked large divots out of the top of the turf suggesting that the rain had not softened the ground but loosened the top few inches. After each of the subsequent races on the round courses, the peasants were kept busy prodding the divots back into the turf.
