Sunderland's sporting director Lee Congerton faces performance review if new signings flop

Congerton's performance will be reviewed if Black Cats are relegated after a hectic summer of transfer activity

Big-money: Borini joined Sunderland on deadline day
Lee Congerton's role at the Stadium of Light will come under scrutiny if Sunderland flop this term.

He arrived at the club as sporting director in March 2014, with a brief to oversee new signings and international scouting.

But, as the Black Cats struggled to land targets, owner Ellis Short got flak.

Short lacks football nous and so he relies on experienced heads around him to make crucial decisions.

boss Dick Advocaat to stay at the club, it is the way the summer transfer window unfolded that is still causing concern.

They brought in eight faces, but it took the late signings of Ola Toivonen and Fabio Borini to ease fan fears – after a horrible start to the season.

Congerton’s business will be reviewed by judging the success of the club’s recruits in a few months.

More bullshit. They bemoan being locked out of the club in regards to new signings yet they have the inside track on this scoop? reeks of ****e.

    In total?

    Or like price per signung?

Because arsenal only signed cech for £10mil while Watford bought any foreigner with a pulse at smaller fees.

In total. Just wondering how we compared to others (not the likes of city. Utd)

Shocked at that arsenal total mind.

Not sure about that but an interesting statistic (not including the last transfer window). We have a higher net spend in the premier league since the league began than Newcastle and Arsenal...

I was shocked to say the least.

Since 2008, we have spent approx 27 million on agents fees...

I find that hard to believe.

Shocking though it is, we didn't much in the earlier years of the PL where the big transfer fees of teh day are nothing compared to the small fees of today. So say a club like Sheff Wed or Ipswich probably get out spent by the likes of Crystal Palace and Swansea.

It's true, I'll pull the stats up later on that I was looking at. Swansea are in the bottom 3 for net spend.
