Well he has been given a new contract , my question is does Brendan think he can do anything in the premier league ?
I guess the answer is clearly "Yes", although I really hope (and do believe!) that Brendan wasn't simply thinking "Well... I didn't see him last year because of injury...maybe he's class!".
I think he will surprise a few people this year our Tommy. He wont get many oppertunities, especially if we get in Routlage and Emnes. But if either Dyer or Sincs picks up an injury, he may be good cover. He has scored some important goals for us in the past. And set some up as well.
tom is a good player to have onboard, he wont get many chances to play first team football if any at all, ..but he will be available if needed. im sure that he will be very prominent in the reserve league and someone who i know thinks he may be made captain for the campaign,.....tom butler is well worth his contract at the end of the day if only to give the youngsters someone to look up to in the reserves and below...
Sorry guys have to disagree. Wasnt good enough for the championship, no chance in the prem. Can't work this out, this is a waste of wages and a squad number. he couldnt get in the side a year and a half ago. Not going to now. sorry this is not for me.
trunds thats why you and me dont make these decisions.....tom is far better than you give him credit for and the powers that call the shots must think so too, ...and they would know and not mere mortals like us...
Sorry Dai but Butler has done nothing of note since we got promoted to League One. He had pace (might not after the injuries) enough to frighten League 1 defences but Championship full backs simply shepherded him out to the touchline and relied on the fact that he can't cross for toffee. Hopefully he's been offered peanuts and his role will be limited to helping the new players/youngsters (apparently he is good with them) in the reserves.
I'm pretty sure i'm right in thinking Butler has other roles within the club as well. Forgive me for not having a source or remembering where I picked up this information, but i'm pretty sure Butler has a role to help new players settle in, get to konw the area, find somewhere to live etc... Almost like when there's a new kid at school, he's the one that shows them the ropes. Strong chance I was eating cheese before bed a few weeks back and had made this up though.
I've heard similar. Though seeing him out a few times on Wind street last year with certain other injured squad members behaving like they are single again would question the good influence bit :/
he is still not for me. if he is there to help new players adjust then remove him from the playing squad. scott hope you are right but i think this money is better spent else where. hope i am proved wrong but don't think i will be.
Oh dear, he stood out for being shocking in one of the worst ever PL teams. Hope for your sakes he's improved since then.
if Brendan thinks he is worth a years contract then thats good enough for me as i cant question him about players and nobody else can either......he's the boss...
Really disappointed that Butler is still with us, couldnt believe when Sousa brought him on as sub a couple of seasons back which triggered an extra year to his contract. Of course he spent the whole of last season out injured but before that he was pretty average at best infact I'd go as far as to say he wasn't championship standard let alone suitable to grace the prem. Brendan may have other reasons for keeping him but can't for the life of me see how he will benefit us on the field of play particularly at places like Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge etc...
Sounds about right, I was studying in Sunderland when he left them and they were all glad he left, think he even tried to sue them over some contract dispute.
He wasnt good enough when in the premier league 6 Years ago. What makes anyone think 6 years on that he will have improved that much to make any sort of impact. I really dont get this. But i still trust our manager.
Let's not forget, as optimistic as we maybe for this season. Some tidy Championship standard players on the books but let out on loan may well become invaluable if we got relegated and the vultures swooped on the best of our squad. A good signing as he will no doubt be cheap.
