I find my countrymen very odd sometimes. We see that the muslims population in Sweden and Danmörk are causing problems and now we have a facebook campaign to invite Syrians to our nation, there are over 14 000 likes and offering of places for 10 000 people. These people are very mad. We can take a few but a number that will twist the complete population is wrong. That size of immigration will not have assimilating, the incomers will create a miniature version of Syria and then want what they have left behind, they will not want a new life in Ísland. We will become a muslim nation and the people do not see this arriving. First will be a challenge to our names. We are a small nation with 1 000 year history and to invite 10 000 people to come will be the beginning of our end.

    I am worried about this.

It's interesting that we all want to protect our cultures and yet short of stopping time no culture has ever remained the same. I'm always reminded of a poem so many of us probably had to read at school...'Ozymandias'. It ends with the words on the pedestal of a ruined statue in the desert:

"Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

I shout at the TV when even BBC presenters use our precious language inaccurately (Venice was literally crawling with people this morning! And don't get me started on 'iconic'!) but I know really I am just :headbang:

You could have also had Boris Johnson as the last one.

I'm pleased about JC being leader. Edit (he offers alternative views) he has some skeletons and made some injudicious remarks some of which are taken deliberately out of context.
However given the current situation particularly in the ME I am unconvinced that he has the wherewithal or the nous to make the required decisions.
I am reminded of president Jack Nicholson in Mars Attacks "why can't we all just... get along?"
If it were a time of peace then I would quite probably give him my vote. It is not and I see nothing in him that will defend us. I fear we will have to sacrifice our principles in order to maintain them. Catch22 is upon us.

Wonderful appointment for Putin, Hamas and the remnants of the IRA. Fortunately an excellent choice for the tories although every government needs an effective opposition, I suppose that means the SNP now.

The new Labour Party will make Syriza look good.

Funny how Tory supporters keep bringing up Corbyn and terrorism. Remind me which party was in power when the UK Government supported the Taliban and negotiated with the IRA. A clue - it was not a red one.

If the British government had not negotiated with the IRA the 'war' with the provisionals would still be raging. Blair's government was very much involved by the way, maybe one of the very few achievements during his tenure.

Major started it (never actually gets the credit due) but my point was you can't slang one side off for doing it when the other is too. Regardless, we shouldn't be having this discussion tonight - we should all be on the lash <somersault>

Actually the chances of being killed in a terrorist attack are, statistically, one in twenty million. In order to have a comparison, the chances of drowning in the bath tub are one in 800,000, and the chances of being killed by a car one in 19,000. How is it then that we always get round to talking about terrorism but not the dangers to eg. innocent pedestrians from cars ? I for one am delighted that Corbyn is leader of the opposition because he will provide just that, opposition, and not the mark 2 Toryism which people have got used to. At least the Labour party is now 'coming home' and I am happy about this - agree with more or less all Corbyn's policies yet am sceptical about his age, would 72 be too old to possibly take on the hardest job of his life ? Ideologically he is well placed to win back Scotland, win back voters which have fallen away to the Greens (for the Greens this is a very bad appointment) and is also more 'open' on EU membership. The aim must be not to win back the middle of politics, but rather the 35% or so of non voters - people who have become estranged from all politics.

Just look at the Labour party between November 1980 and October 1983 and you will see the same policies being proposed. Result was a disaster for Labour.

I agree the Labour Party is now being represented by a true socialist, unfortunately the UK does not want Michael Foot mark two to resurrect class warfare and strike prone industrial relations. The missing voters do not want to watch "all our yesterdays". How many more examples of left wing revivals which swiftly turn into incompetent rabble do the voters really need?

Whatever happens its gonna be fun.

I like JC as an individual...he was Mrs H's local MP for years...but I wonder if he knows what he's taken on. We've contacts with members of the Foot family (friends in Devon who knew them well anyway) and he was personable too. I'd like to think media criticism will focus on policy and how it could be implemented; I fear it will sink to more personal levels.

The problem is the policies not the guy who I'm sure is a decent chap.
