Having his contract paid up and terminated, as with Osvaldo.

Now being reported in South America also.

Because it's in his and the club's best interests. What's the point of letting him rot in the reserves when he can find a new club and get his career back on track. I wish Gaston well, it just didn't work out here.

I understand letting him go but why pay him, if we are going to pay him then surely he has to stay with the squad.

Gets 60k a week of our wage bill. No one was ever going to buy him. Cortese's two big "presents" are now busts. They probably are close to being our worse two signings ever as well. If you consider the transfer fee paid and huge wages.

But if we are paying up his contract then the wage outlay is still there, is the difference it being 1 lump sum rather than a weekly payment. I must be being dumb i fully understand getting rid of osvaldo any way possible but Gaston is not a trouble maker so i don't see the benefit to saints in paying him and releasing him.

Yep, take a hit now and he can go away and be just about to come good/thinking ahead of the other players/classy, just needs better players around him, etc ad nauseam for someone new.

I so wanted him to succeed as well.

He isn't part of the team. He gets injured a hell off a lot. Instead of paying him £60k a week until the end off his contract we can negotiate and pay him a certain amount. Even if we pay up all his wages it's will save us on medical costs.....:emoticon-0110-tongu

Gaston has probably (no inside knowledge at all, just based on common sense) taken less than 12 months of salary to leave. He gets a lump sum and if he can find a team soon, ends up having the lump sum as a bonus. Cash now is worth more than cash in the future to a footballer in this situation so we've probably shaved a few thousand quid off the overall bill.

There may be a discounted amount paid to clear him off the books, hence better than paying down over time. The only other thing that occurs to me is that maybe termination payments don't count towards Financial fair Play rules in some way , but perhaps somebody more "au fait" on this could advise?

I know what you mean SK, but the pay-off will surely be less than the rest of his contract, plus it allows Saints to promote an Academy player into the squad. On Gaston's side, he is free to go and resume his former impressive career in a league where he can shine, rather than wasting his time here. He was a lovely player to watch sometimes, but his game didn't suit Saints or perhaps even the Premier league itself. If he's never going to play why keep him cooped up here. I'll miss him because I always wanted him to succeed with us.

Still glad to rub Lawro's face in it. :)

Main motivation for this will be for FFP I imagine. Frees up substantial salary funds

Is good for both sides. Even if it costs the same money, it gives him a chance to find another club and we get rid of a player that just takes up staff time. I remember a manager saying that players you don't use take up more of your time than others...since they are in your ear all the time. He's also involved in training, using kits, being fed....what is the point as I cannot imagine the circumstances where he would ever play for us short of an outbreak of Ebola (and he'd probably be the one who gave it to the others).

Just didn't work, not in the same category as Osvaldo, so I wish him luck.

I don't mean this unkindly as I'm included in this posse and I know he always tried, but are there any other contenders for the prize of most-liked, least-criticised Saints player to ever have achieved virtually nothing? Your nominations please ...

maybe being abit dumb, but as the club would have known he is not part of the plans, could they not sell him for a minimal fee (lets say 100 pounds) or even let him leave for free so he can find a club and neg his own contract so the club would not have to pay him off which must amount to millions if he a couple of years left. that is if he wanted to leave .

Peñarol - the team he supports and started with - would like to take him back with them in Uruguay.

But there's no way they can afford the sort of fee/loan fee or his wages. This would make sense for him and us.

No need for any bad blood just disappointed it didn't work out.

I suspect we tried various combinations...paying part of his wages for example, but it didn't work out for him at Hull. After his performances and injuries over the last few years, why would any decent club take him. That only leaves lower clubs...perhaps he wouldn't agree. We obviously vastly overpay him (probably after desperately trying to sign him), so he won't abandon his contract and no other club will take it on. I say draw a blue line and move on....keep repeating to yourselves..it's not our money.

Good luck to Gastón and sorry it didn't work out. The Mustang was great though.
