I'm not sure about first class honours, but Ian McColl had a degree in civil engineering in the mid-1940s, Charlie Buchan was a qualified teacher from about 1910, and Tinsley Lindley of Notts Forest was a practising lawyer back in the 1880s. I also think Steve Heighway of Liverpool had a degree in something (1970s), and Billy Liddell of Liverpool was a chartered accountant (1950s) though I'm less sure about those two. But it doesn't matter who, and how many, went before. Duncan has it now. Well done, Duncan.
I read that when I was tired last night and thought it said "It's a pity that he's an Engineer" and couldn't work out why we were shunning engineers!! Besides - we only shun that ginger twat up the road! Congratulations to Duncan! As has been said, not often you see an intelligent footballer. Could the fact that he's been finishing his degree be the reason he hasn;t been starting games? He does not need too much pressure in a time of dissertation! It'll also be nice to have a footballer interviewed where you don;t think to yourself "****ing hell it's a good job he can play football"
Let's hope he doesn't have to fall back on his degree because football never worked out for him, all I know is, England are probably in the worst shape I've ever seen them in and we need talented footballers coming through, thick and fast.
Makes me appreciate the 90's now. How many of our first team now would even get a game over players that played back then? Hart wouldn't get a game over Seaman. Rooney and Vardy wouldn't get a look in with the likes of Shearer, Owen and Sheringham. Midfield and Defence are an absolute joke.
Only Rooney for me mate, Shearer was an out and out striker and Owen was a deadly finisher with pace, but neither of them have anywhere near the vision that Rooney has, or the technical ability. I'd play him with Lineker probably. I'd love to have seen Rooney in the Euro 96 squad, on the same pitch as Gazza. I was looking at the bit that said "The Sunderland forward has already been celebrating this season with goals on his Premier League and League Cup debuts, but made it a hat-trick when he picked up the results for his economics and business management degree on Thursday afternoon." - which only says his goal was Premier League.

Andy Cole? for England? Rooney is far better than both of those players, he's scoring at a better rate than Shearer and he's scored more than Owen already and he's not even a number 9 like those two. Not to mention the embarrassment of medals Rooney has in comparison to both. I think nostalgia counts for a lot when people chat about their best goal scorers, maybe people will appreciate what Rooney's achieved after he's retired.
Well we once had a player named Kevin Phillips (won the european golden boot) who could not get much of a look in regarding england. Wonder how he would have done given a decent crak at it.
It's about taking chances innit, he's in the Andy Cole camp. He had 8 chances and never scored for his country. Other less talented players such as Crouch, thrive on the international stage, it's hard to understand, well Crouch isn't, he had Beckham supplying him and he's the tallest man on the pitch! Heskey for example, he seemed to do well for England.
