Hello, everyone. If my regular readers will allow it I’ll nominate one across the Welsh border of the morrow. I’m still convinced that they are up to something! Connections that is, incidentally, not the Welsh. IMPULSIVE AMERICAN (5.45 Chepstow) – was trained in France for his first 9 races and although he remained a maiden across The Channel he finished a decent 2nd in his last pair of heats in that fellow EU member state. Subsequently purchased by those old rogues, the Pipe’s, he’s had one run to date in this Isle when a disappointing 9th ‘oooooooooooooooop’ at Carlisle a couple of weeks ago. Impulsive American was well supported that day though (4’s into 2/1) and genuine excuses can be offered as the old boy was far, far too keen in the early to mid part of the contest. Long term I’m sure Impulsive American has been purchased to go hurdling but the fact that the Pipe’s are preserving with him on the level makes me believe they think they can inflict quite a bit of damage off his current perch of 64 first. I think this is quite lenient actually based on his last couple of runs in France. The impressive apprentice, Tom Marquand, has been booked and takes a further 5 pounds off the geldings back which can only be viewed as a positive. Meanwhile, the old rogues are in good form so far this month with a 36% strike rate having been achieved at the time of writing. Meanwhile, re his opponents I don’t think they are the greatest bunch ever to face the old boy starter. Good luck, pilgrims.
Doncaster 14.30 ****er bet Mistrusting 6/1 Betfred - 2 points Fadhayyil 9/2 Coral - 2 points Dusky Queen 14/1 PP - 1 point
Ron - Fadhayyil pwise tipped up for tomorrow I'm afraid - so no chance - I follow him every tip he puts up and has just come off a losing run of 60 - and then tipped Cotai today at 11/4 - doh so much for value !!
I'm off to Laytown races tomorrow. Can't wait and really intruiged to experience it. Hear it's a really cracking day. Does anyone have any experience in what horses tend to do well or what to look for in a winner whether it be the draw or track form at other tracks which historically translates well or whether you need a horse that stays further etc? Any guidance (or suggestions) very welcome indeed
Using stalls for the first time there today as it was usually a standing start. A horse that stay's it's trip well would have to be a plus on the surface. Oor Jock in the first has form around there and is on a winnable mark, Rigid Rock also in the claiming race could go well. Not a meeting I would usually get too involved with. Damian English is throwing a fair few at the meeting, keep an eye out if any money comes for one of his as it is usually ominous. Enjoy your day.
The forecast has taken a turn (goddamn you Irish Weather) and heavy rain is forecast tomorrow and showers on Saturday. Champion Stakes will tear up...All roads lead to Longchamp ???
Recent history suggests that the Sceptre Stakes (2:30) will go to one of the three year olds. Last year’s winner Kiyoshi has done nothing this term to indicate a repeat win. Well regarded Lady Correspondent has not been seen since disappointing in the Nell Gwyn back in April. Realtra is a course and distance winner but needs to improve on her Haydock victory over a mile. It is hard to know whether to take Mistrusting’s York handicap win at face value, a remark that can also be applied to Fadhayyil’s Listed win there; however, the latter’s collateral form looks good enough at this level. As the prices have all gone (apparently thanks to Pricewise), I will not be getting involved. There is too much York form in the Park Hill Stakes (3:05) so it is completely overlooked. David Simcock won the 4:50 last year and his HALATION has an excellent opportunity having been leniently treated by the handicapper for his Ascot win, the risk being that this is a furlong further than he has been before. The main danger may be Elkaayed, who ran as if something was amiss at Sandown, whilst Blue Waltz won the preceding race last year but is still in the handicapper’s grip. There are a couple of interesting newcomers in the 5:25 for the usual suspects, plus one for the Prince of Wales.
Interesting that you should mention the weather and Longchamp. I have been keeping an eye on both. The band of rain that is going to sweep across Ireland and Britain over Friday extends far enough South that they might get it in Paris too. On Wednesday at the first forfeit stage, Golden Horn had been left in the Prix Niel and Gleneagles had been left in the Prix Du Moulin, so it appeared connections are keeping their options open. Notably, King George winner Postponed was left in the Prix Foy with a pacemaker. However, on Thursday morning Golden Horn has been taken out of the Prix Niel (eight remain including Ol’ Man River), Gleneagles has been taken out of the Prix Du Moulin (twelve remain including Arod and Time Test), Treve heads nine in the Prix Vermeille (including Arabian Queen and Diamondsandrubies); and Postponed heads eight in the Prix Foy (including Dolniya). So it is Leopardstown or nothing for the big two...
I hope the weather stays fine as Golden Horn @ 2/1 looks like the bet of the season. Not sure it'll be 2/1 once ante-post rules no longer apply though
On past judgements then are we assuming it is nothing, or at least one will definitely not turn up. Doubt they will risk Golden Horn after the last day on anything other than Good or better and they haven't taken a chance with Gleneagles either so not looking great unless the rain doesn't do to much damage.
In the opener at Donny the fav looks sure to be a good thing, but at the prices I will take two at bigger prices: GREENFYRE and FASHIONABLE SPIRIT can get 20s on both
Afternoon all. I've been slowly coming out of my Summer hibernation with a couple of small Lucky 15's recently, but to be honest I couldn't pick my nose at the moment so these should be avoided... 1:55 Don - SALVO 14/1 2:30 Don - KIYOSHI 9/1 3:05 Don - GRETCHEN 9/2 3:40 Don - APPLETON 16/1 I hope you're hitting the dartboard more than me guys and good luck to any having a play today!!
Intriguing few days racing ahead indeed, especially to see if anything can put itself into the Arc picture. For today, ALPINE DREAM 7/1 can win the opener at Doncaster. Learning all the way before staying on pretty readily close home, I think a mark of 72 for this daughter of Dream Ahead might be lenient in the context of this race and she receives just over a stone from the favourite. I'm quite tempted on an e/w dabble with Our Joy as a saver, who has shown real signs of ability and now handicapping can show up very well if settling through the early part of the race.
Wow, that winner is a really nice filly, different class to the rest of the field, including mine who had the door shut in her face, not that it made a scrap of difference.
