The 11+ Exam and streamed grammar schools, offering smart kids from working-class families the chance to be successful in careers previously (and again now) accessible to only the silver-spoon chinless-wonder brigade. Thank you, Labour Party. And remember, Ull was in the forefront of their demise -- thanks, Labour voters. You've managed to put superiority in wealth back in front of superiority in brain-power.
Chasing game was Relavio.(I called it reallio). Another game called 'tip cat or 'peggy'. You should obtain a copy of 'Gas Man's Been' by Harold Snell- Memoirs of a Hull lad born on Hedon Road in the 20's. Did you ever make a Slingading?
In the 1950's Hull became the first City in England to offer a subsidy for a working class kid to stay on at school from age 16-18 and take 'A' Level in order to reach University qualification. I was one of them. Done by a grant from Hull City Council. Thank you Labour.
did you ever make headmaster after your years as an English teacher ? PS. Didn't start the sentence with a capital letter....woe is me.
Oh. I didn't know that HCC was progressive, and that Ull is regarded as a leader in educational standards. Thank you for the enlightenment. In the 1960's, HGS was certainly one of the most successful grammar schools in the UK, producing a disproportionately large number of leaders of industry, academia, etc. Look at recent leadership of BOC, Norwich City FC, BAe, ... And the list goes on. But I'm interested in your statement. Who got the subsidy? The schools? Certainly not the parents. I was there, too.
Oooh, bitter? No, I never made headmaster. But I'm sure I would have if I'd needed to follow a last-resort profession as a teacher. Last resort because even the very best of these "professionals" are judged by the "measured" performance of the majority of their peers ... who spell as well as you do. Do you have any explanation for the (as reported) educational standards in Ull? Bad teachers? Thicker-than-average kids? Victimization of Northerners? By the way, again, I'm from Ull, and in many ways proud of it.
It was paid to my parents when I was at Riley High. At that time my Uncle was a councillor on the HCC. Elected as Labour he was to the far left of Mao! Both his sons went to HGS. Subsequently he migrated with his family to Aus and lived in Sydney. Was here before I came in the mid- sixties.
Bitter my arse. Nor arrogant, unlike some. I'm also proud of Hull. I do not get the impression you are sincere in your own statement on that front. Is this forum easy pickings for your seeming disdain, demonstrated by contributions which focus on the use of English rather than its main purpose, football ? You've postured the generalizations. Presumably you have explanations. I'd hazard a guess they are as outlandish as your respect for the teaching profession. People from Hull, generally speaking, have a sense of humour. What happened ?
One of the little things you don't see any more is teachers hitting children. And thank heavens for that. I had a teacher at Penshurst School in Hessle. Miss Turner, and the more I think of her the worse her memory. I remember we had spelling books, and on Monday we would put down maybe twenty or thirty words that we had to memorize for the Friday spelling test. The woman began pontificating about the English language, and incredibly, said that "in our language there are very few words containing three consecutive vowels". I know I shouldn't have but I jumped up and bawled out "'Miss, 'scuse me Miss, I can think of a conspicuous exception!" Guess what, the bloody harridan marched down to my desk and set about smacking my legs. Unfortunately it was the same woman who tried to teach us arithmetic. She couldn't do long division with divisors greater than nine.
City telephone score service. I used it a lot, was often the only way to get the score though cant think why, surely Grandstand gave updates / World of Sport (or at least half /full time scores)? Was this pre Radio Humberside? Think the number was 211422, though it could be a number for something totally different?
I remember how proud my mum and dad were when they got a Dynatron TV, they cost a fortune and you need a fork-lift to move the bloody thing... please log in to view this image
