I lived on an island in the Philippines for 6 months - there was 20 of us there, 2 hours away from the next human and with a satellite phone for emergencies only. Nothing else. Utter bliss (but then, I am completely up my own arse!)
I once lost my mobile on a night out at I time my broadband hadn't been connected, was a week before I could access the internet again, utter hell. Was glad when I could finally take my head out of my abyss and see the world again (for abyss read arse).
The internet's not the world though, is it? Whilst it provides a window on the world, it stops us looking out the real window at the real world. I consider time spent looking at the sky more rewarding than time spent looking at a screen, but the latter is quite addictive (I logged on half an hour ago to answer a couple of emails, now I'm checking this site, then I'll probably end up watch some old music vids on youtube. But frankly I'd be better off watching the two big crows sitting on the ariel outside my window for 5 mins, then getting on with something productive).
Anyone remember WBA away a few years ago in the torrential snow?! Think we drew 1-1. It's the highest ground in the country and it was absolutely bloody freezing!
I keep checking and using the internet when at home, but don't have a smart phone, so when I am out I just enjoy my surroundings and company. You don't miss what you've never had...I think people living on their phones, especially when in company, are saddos.
When you mentioned 'looking at the sky' I naturally assumed that you meant Sky TV? Why on earth would someone want to leave the comfort of there armchair/laptop to walk all the way outside to then crank your head upward to view cloud formations, when you could go online or download an ap do do the same?
Just walked passed a little girl walking with her Mum...she said, 'Aeroplane.' The mother (on her phone, of course) said she couldn't see one. The little girl pointed up and the Mum said, 'Oh, in the sky.' I would be seriously worried if it wasn't.
A Stoke friend was telling me how unhappy the Baggies fans are, since Pullis took over. Even thrashing 9 man Stoke 1-0, left them bemoaning their downfall, from being West Brazil to a poor imitation of Stoke City. Ref the internet comments, my wife and I were in a local bar, in Spain, last Sunday, when a family of 5 took a nearby table, all took out their phones/tablets and proceeded to ignore each other. As my missus says, we are just a few years away from being a nation of hunchbacks (people bent over their phones), with arthritic thumbs from all the texting.
I remember a time when I was walking along Above Bar and all the people were shopping [this was years ago] and so was I. It was a fantastic summer's day the like of which doesn't happen too often in GB, even down here in Southampton. The sky was a deep Mediterranean blue and it looked like a dome with the white Sun in the middle of it all. And nobody noticed. I know because I searched everyone's faces and they were all toiling with their heads slightly bowed, carrying their shopping. Perhaps it wasn't that amazing, but they had been so concentrated on the trappings of living that they forgot to appreciate life and their surroundings. I still remember thinking never to lose sight of what is beautiful. Look up occasionally.
It's getting the right balance. I'm an IT guy but also love the outdoors. I'll hike up a mountain, see an animal or flower or something I don't know and whip out my smart phone to find out what it is. I'll go out with friends, after half hour of discussion about whether something is this or that we'll look it up and gain some knowledge. Life's all about balance. People who stare at there phone's constantly when "socializing" do annoy me though. Especially if there isn't many people in the group, you start to take it personally, am I boring you.
I'm a fan of easy access to information as I have always loved knowledge, but, as Cardiff said, not when you should be socializing with real human beings. The fear of missing out must make 'phone addicts' very anxious people.
I've had people ask if I'm going to check my messages when my phone makes a noise. I say, no I'm talking to you right now. They start looking quite nervous, like it's painful to them to not instantly check you phone whenever it makes a noise.

It snowed at The Hawthorns when I went to see them play there in 04/05 and David Prutton missed a glorious opportunity in the last 10 minutes; those extra two points might have kept us up that year! I have seen us play WBA three times in the last 10 years and all have been 0-0. Also, in the last four encounters there have been three goals, not more than one in any. Expect something fairly similar here, with an odd goal in it, especially as Southampton have been poor away from home recently. Will go with a 1-0 home win or 1-1; let's hope for the latter.
I believe he has adopted an asymetric hairstyle in order to swerve to the left when running at speed. Running backwards achieves reverse swerve. If he polishes the left side of his head at half time it can reverse the whole effect.
