Apparently Berahino is going to be offered a new contract with a £25million buyout clause. Most of that will have to be paid up front though. Surely we will go back for him in January.
No way will Berahino tie himself into a contract that makes it impossible for him to leave either in January or, at the latest, next Summer. If he signs a contract that wants most of the £25 million up front, then I doubt that we will be in for him.
What Levy said was 100% right. Even the likes of Real and City pay their transfer fees in installments. It's unrealistic to expect a club to pay that much money up front. I agree with HIAG - I doubt Berahino will sign it. If he does, I'd be more worried that he is a gold digger tbh as WBA are presumably offering him a massive wage hike as an incentive to sign it when both parties know he'll be off come January, next summer at the latest.
Really do not want him at spurs...if he joins us and is a success he will do exactly the same thing to us when city/united/chelsea/real madrid come calling.
Depends what went on behind the scenes. If he was told that he'd be allowed to leave, whether by Pulis or Peace, he has every right to be upset and to want to vent his frustrations. It's kind of similar to Modric in the way that both managers puclicly sympathised with the player and talked about them possibly leaving, going against their chairman's stance. The differences are that Modric signed a new 6 year deal, without a release clause, around the time Levy is supposed to have told him he could leave if a bigger club comes in and that the club trying to sign the player were the ones making all the leaks to the media in Modric's case.
So who are we going to be getting rid of in January to free up £25mill? Unless we're planning on selling Kane, Lloris, or Eriksen, then it'll need to be more than 1 player to fetch that sort of money.
Yeah, if we could afford to spend that on him on transfer deadline day, then I don't see why we couldn't in January. Whether we'd be prepared to do so is another thing entirely.
I hear we're going to offer £10m up front, with annual installments of £1m for the next fifteen years.
Yeah why would we not want him or be able to afford in January. Especially as Poch and Levy said he was the only player they wanted.
Even then, we couldn't afford to buy Berahino. Any player we sell will be on instalments - which is the norm, these days. The idea that we are going to sell a player and get £25m cash up-front is nothing short of fantastical. This is why any one advising Berahino will have to be advising him that merely having a £25m buy-out clause is not enough, unless it has built into it the reality that that £25m will paid out by instalments. Frankly, if Berahino signs another contract with WBA, we can kiss good-bye to buying him, and Berahino had better get used to the idea that he's playing for a **** team for the foreseeable future.
While we’re clearly short a striker, I think we may have about the right number of players in the squad. In the recent past, we’ve had too many. Everyone is likely to get a fair crack and will have to measure up.
I think the only reason why we're persevering with him is down to the fact that he was a good match at U21 level, with Kane. But for that, I can't see why we'd be making so much fuss over the matter.
Let’s see if Berahino is better this year than Clinton and Son, who are both cheaper. The lesson for ENIC and Levy may be: don’t fail conspicuously. I looked through some of the hopes for this transfer window, and what we actually have comfortably exceeds the run of them, I think. I’m not sure if anyone thought we’d get three players of the quality of Alderweireld, Clinton and Son. While it is hard to weigh that against the fact that no one thought we’d have a gaping hole in the squad, I think the bigger factor in people’s disappointment was Levy persisting in what most of us thought was the obviously futile pursuit of Berahino. It was embarrassing. We’ll have to see whether we can develop an effective team without Kane. But I’m very pleased we addressed the problem of no pacy attackers extremely well, and shored up the defenders much better than I thought we would. There does seem to be a plan in place which makes sense and seems to be moving along. The team whose fans ought to be livid are Arsenal. Plenty of money and just about nothing in a year when they should be able to challenge for the title. Their fans had a right to expect more.
Yes, you do get the impression that we are going to be harder to score against, and a lot more dangerous on the counter-attack. The only thing that none of us can be sure about, just yet, is how effective we are going to be at converting chances.
Until Kane last season we have been creating chances and not taking them for years. The striker area has been our problem for a very long time mainly I think because these are the most expensive players on the planet. If it looks like you can score goals big clubs, the biggest, are always ready to hoover up. Spurs position on the edge of the big clubs means we are going to find it hardest of all. We have three options, grow our own (Kane) buy a youngster with potential (Berahino) or buy a star near the end of his career. Or 4 get lucky (Berbatov). WE should not really be surprised at how difficult it is for us to fill this role.
