I know you two have had " a bit of a spat" lately but I honestly don't think UiR was comparing them ability wise, especially since he admits that (like most of us) he has never heard of Martial. It was more a comparison of circumstance than anything else with perhaps a bit of hope thrown in.
It's encouraging to know other top teams were chasing him, I think the fee is skewing peoples perspective on this instead of letting them look at a young player who is obviously well thought of. Nice to see he has his first call up to the French squad too, he must have something about him.
Unfortunately for you and others like CFC, it is not just me who believe that Chelsea fans know very little about football, much less than fans of other neighbouring London clubs. It is Jose your manager himself, in his book, who said it clear and loud. Written in black and white. When asked last year in an interview whether he regretted saying this, he said that sometimes in life you just have to accept the facts and live with them.
But you havent reserved your judgement (although I wish you would). You've nailed your colours firmly to the mast. You can see why he's the next Thierry Henry, remember? You're going to ignore Nicholas and the like? Basically anyone who says there's a question mark over this boy's potential to lead the line? However you'll happily listen to anyone else (who may be equally as stupid as Merson and Nicholas) that happens to say what you want to hear? No bias there then. In short we could say he could be the next Henry based on: A) being French B) being a pacey winger transformed to a striker. C) United have signed him Or he could be the next Bebe based on: A) being a complete unknown B) being unproven in the role at the level required C) having played in an inferior league D) United fans convincing themselves he was a gem others had missed. Yep, it could be either but based on past experience the second option is a likely possibility whereas the first is based more on hope rather than anything tangible. QED as I've said in earlier posts... all we can do is hope
Not that I want to intrude upon your private affair but you are as guilty as UIR in your bias. May be its your words. Why is the second a LIKELY possibility whereas the first is just based on hope? . You give more weight to the second option when there is nothing to suggest he'll be more Bebe than Henry The jury may be out and both options possible but to already write him off is just negative (couldn't find another word more appropriate ) Just a simple Q: would you be over the moon to be totally wrong ?
As far as I know the only person who mentioned Anderson was me. And it wasn't as a direct comparison with Martial but as a counterpoint to Ronaldo. Ronaldo was a success, Anderson was a failure. You win some you lose some, and this might go either way. I'm neither a bell end nor 'have no knowledge'.
I totally don't get the whole Bebe argument. It is totally flawed and makes no sense. I've repeatedly pointed to the fact that this guy now plays for France, played in champions league and destroyed Arsenal. Where exactly is Treble seeing alignment with Bebe? I'm guessing just because his own knowledge of football is completely local. Instead of actually looking at the facts, he seems to be drawing pointless parallels using that limited knowledge of the world outside of what he knows. There's also no need to compare him to Henry. His name is MARTIAL! And like any other player, he has an opportunity to fulfill his ambitions and help our club. We should stop the nonsensical arguments about who he is known to in England. He is a French International for crying out loud!!
One more thing.. Wayne Rooney scored 15 times in 67 games for Everton before coming to United. Say what you want about Rooney, but he will go down as one of United all time greats. How about that for drawing a parallel with Mr. Martial?
I know, it's a nonsense comparison. He'd been playing premier league football before our very eyes, we knew what we were getting. He had to move 35 miles up the road, it's not even remotely similar.
Do you think Rooney would have succeeded had he moved to France instead? A place where he would have been unknown at that time. I'm of firm believe that he absolutely would have succeeded!
From what I've seen so far, Martial is very well regarded in France. So in essence, similar to young Rooney in League 1. I think it's up to us to accept that our ignorance of his existence does not make him any less of stellar kid with best record in Europe.
You seem to be missing the glaring point but I personally really can't be arsed to labour it any more. I hope he succeeds. Everyone does. Why a load of you seem so ****ing offended by other people's opinions is beyond me.
I do get the point, Chief. I just think our expectations are absurdly low. I'm in the "wait and see and somewhat excited about what to come" camp.
