We'd all be delighted with a Carling Cup win, FA Cup is more unobtainable at the moment. It's all down to luck and team selection.

Intertotos different though, it was effectively just another UEFA place but starting from an earlier qualifying round, we got into Europe by our league position. FA or Carling is a trip to Wembley and a place in Europe, I could live with that.

Well every single team in the Premiership should be aiming for one of the two domestic cups, they'd be stupid not to.

Good question Tash, hasn't really been asked yet, I think we should definately aim high in the Carling and FA Cups. It would be disappointing to hear the typical "we'll try our best but will concentrate more on our league position" from Pards. I think we already have a great team and as said above a much stronger team than Birmingham had. Why not lads.

I wonder if Pardew could get us to an FA Cup final like he did with West Ham in 2006, but obviously not losing. Possibly the best game I've ever seen in my life.

    This was the cup run for West Ham;

    3rd - Norwich 1 - 2 WHU
    4th - WHU 4 - 2 Blackburn
    5th - Bolton 0 - 0 WHU
    Rep - WHU 2 - 0 Bolton
    6th - Man City 1 - 2 WHU
    SF - Boro 0 - 1 WHU
    F - Liverpool 3 - 3 WHU (3 - 1 pens)

Just shows that the luck of the draw can take you to the final, and considering Zamora, Konchesky and Anton Ferdinand took penalties, it's no surprise they lost.

Do you think we've been losing cup-ties on purpose then?

When teams don't take the cups seriously, it's because their priorities lie elsewhere; winning the league, or qualifying for the CL, avoiding relegation, or because they couldn't get a babysitter (Arsenal).

Beyond the obvious achievement of actually winning the cup, the question that needs to be asked is, are we more likely to qualify for Europe through the league or cup? That may have changed now if the statements about mounting a challenge on the European places via the league are to be believed, but I think we are still a side with top half aspirations. For me, winning the Carling Cup seems a much more achievable target than finishing 6th. Surely being back in the UEFA Cup would increase the stature and revenue of the club, if only marginally?

I would much prefer to see Newcastle vs. Salzburg on a Thursday night than "The Girl with a Turnip for a Liver" or whatever other garbage is on that night, no?

No, you should target a cup every season. So should we. We won't get it, but if you don't go for it there's no chance and we ain't gonna win the league for a while!

Bang on! <ok> Every single year we should be aiming for first place in the league, win all possible cups, unbeaten in all competitions. As should all clubs really, when you think about it

But yeah, I'd be pretty ecstatic if we won the Carling Cup. I know a lot of people see it as a tiny insignificant cup but we can't be picky! It's a bloody cup and it's a lot lot more than we've won in fricking years!

I was 10 when we last won the FA Cup. Just turned 49 in June. I just want to see the lads win another trophy before I die! Can't be too much to ask, surely?

Annoys me when you hear Arsenal fans bitching about 6 years without a trophy.

We should absolutely be targeting a cup this season. Last season was a let down on both cups, especially the league cup after that cracking result at chelsea. It's our best way back in to Europe. I pray to see us win something before I die. if the brummies can win a cup we bloody well can.
