I logged on to the board tonight expecting some comments about Villa supporters choosing to display a 'Refugees Welcome' banner at their next game. Have the HCST discussed the possibility of us following their excellent example? We're all a bit fed up of economic migrants, but refugees - especially from those countries we (but mainly the Yanks) have bombed to ****ery - should always be accepted, no?

I thought this was going to be about the Brighton fans that have taken up residence!
But yes, we should happily take refugees.
We have taken tens, if not hundreds, of thousands in previous conflicts. There is a need to do the same now

Guessing a few on here will have very backwards view on the matter but it's true we need to do something and spread things accordingly. A joke to have countries like spain bitching over less than 2000 when germany will take a million by end of year.

Or a country so like England, that it is England, arguing over 1000, and still only having taken 216 !

Presumably anyone who is happy for refugees to come here would be happy for them to go live with them? Or provide for them directly as one of the family? If not, then they're guilty of NIMBY hypocrisy.

2 pages max for this thread?

Love this 5th form politics debate. Adlig Schwenkitten would be the perfect summation.

    Narrow argument
Either you've swallowed the spin about how we, as a country, can't afford anything because migrants and benefit cheats are taking all the cash...or you are one of the 1% that are actually taking all the cash with tax evasion on an incredible scale

Imagine if all of Britain's male population ran off with their tails between their legs and claimed asylum in the US when Hitler was preparing to invade. Nope. They stuck around and fought, as did the Russians in the East.

There are more Syrian refugees of fighting age leaving Syria than there are members of ISIS and Assad's army combined. Arm them and tell them to go back and fight for their country's and families' future. Grant refugee status to the children and the elderly who can't fight.

You can close it now, OLM. Lmao.

Well, I just think we should look after our own first (along with cracking down on benefits cheats and corporations that evade tax). If there's anything left over, then fine. But it's not just that - look at the housing shortage. Look at how crowded our road and rail network is - that can be seen directly every day. Our infrastructure is creaking badly. Where are we supposed to put everyone that just turns up? Net immigration is already ridiculous. That's why I asked if those that say we should take the refugees would happily house them.

I have things to say about Blair but that would get the thread closed.

I know that. You want them here - would you have them in your house? Or next door even?

Alright, do nothing then. Parliament voted against British military action in Syria, remember? Not our fault and none of our business that a civil war is occurring between Assad, ISIS, moderate rebels, other Islamist groups and pro-Kurdish militias. Like I said, give refuge to the poor kids and elderly who physically cannot fight, but the men and women should stand up and fight for their country's future instead of running away from the problems of an internal civil war.

In my house is irrelevant, no one is housing anyone against their will. Next door, yeh why not? I have a polish neighbour to my left, Ozzie below, Swedish opposite and Vietnamese to my right. Who gives a ****.

You, obviously. You feel the need to identify your neighbours by their nationality and/or ethnic background.
