Not if they would be better off playing friendlies. Must be pretty poor quality league if they are considering leaving it.

Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool all have teams in the reserve league so I can't see how it could be that bad?

I have no idea, cant recall watching any reserve games but if they think they'd be better off not being in the league it mustn't be all that good.

Think it's probably bollocks, I hope so as well, though certain teams don't have reserves anymore (Tottenham I think is one).

Didn't Keegan basically dump youth development to free up money for the first team though? I can't imagine Pardew and Ashley being that daft. If they feel we are better off not playing competitive reserve football, then so be it.

It just sounds to me like they're going to trim down the squad to a minimum, loan out decent youth players,(Lua-Lua to Brighton etc), and not give the players on the fringe of the first team a chance to play together. If they are going to play friendlies but not against Man Utd or Liverpool, who would possibly be better opposition?

Maybe it's easier to schedule matches outside of the confines of the Reserve League? Last season it seemed like they were always having matches cancelled and rescheduled. Or was that one of the academy teams? Either way, it's sounded like a lot of clubs are pulling out of the league, so there must be legitimate reasons for it

I doubt there would be any better way to develop our youth/fringe players, I dont think ditching the reserve league would be a good idea either.

I think the next step is to sign Lukaku, which would no doubt make Newcastle look like the top side for attracting young players.

arsenal, man u etc always send there best prospects out on loan or keep them close to 1st team so reserves are often filled with the very young and those that wont make it

We could get a feeder team and send players there when they are too old for the academy. Gateshead, even?

Do they plan on setting up friendlies against European teams or something instead of being in the reserve league? I guess it could be better in some ways if this happened.

Didn't they change the structure last season to one where you play less games against fewer clubs? Maybe friendlies just makes more sense in terms of scheduling to help first teamers get fit and the youngsters get match time. Regardless it won't be a Keegan style killing off, there'll be logic to it with Abeid, Vuckic, Richardson etc coming through.

Not such a bad idea. Means the kids could still live at home too.

  18. At first i was against it, but if the league is that poor quality, then i suppose it would be better for them to get all their first team action in cup games, friendlies and the odd game as cover.

The major flaw in my opinion is they may lose match fitness if they aren't playing regularly.

Agree with this. There will be busy times of the season where it will be very difficult to arrange frendlies against other (even very lowly placed) sides. What happens then? Unless we could guarantee one friendly match per week for the reserves it's too risky.

Would be a terrible decision to pull out of the league. It's just idiotic if they did, and to be honest I don't think he can possibly mean that. There is a reason why all the top sides have a team in it. Friendlies etc are pointless for me. I'm sure we'll continue to use it in the correct way, to help senior players regain fitness/maintain fitness, and allow youth players to develop and stake their claim. Friendlies won't help this.
