If it doesn't - Well played Mr. Peace. Gotta give him credit as we would if the roles were reversed

I guess WBA will now have a very unhappy player on their books. If he gets relegated to the reserves for a while his value may well drop and they will regret not taking the money. From his comments it doesn't appear as if the club have said to him 'give it another year and see how we get on and then you can leave' as we apparently did with Modric and Bale. Still 43 minutes to go so who knows!

It’s very clever of Levy, the way he’s gotten the fans back on Ade’s side.

Very true. Comparing Peace's stance on Berahino with ours on Modric and Bale is unrealistic. The latter too were playing for a far better club with serious chances of CL football and trophies. More than that, both players had already hit their peak and were clearly world class, whereas Berahino has only had one stand-out season and is still very young. Beyond that, both Bale and Modric were at the beginning of long term contracts when the nonsense started; Saido has 2 years left and sure as hell isn't signing a new one now! His value will plummet.

The problem is that if we now have a ****ty season because we have no striking options then is Berahino gonna want to come? If he's spends the season rotting in the reserves do we want him? If he backtracks and has a great season again then in all likelihood a bigger fish will come in.

    No new striker is moronic.
We are clearly short up front and it has cost us in the last 3 matches and will only get worse. Kane is clearly tired/not fully fit/off form and we need an alternative.
This makes it a terrible transfer window imo

Whoever eventually buys him is irrelevant. Even if he has a great season he'll be going into the last year of his contract at a relatively small club. There's no way they'll receive more than what we're offering now. Maybe equal to, but not more than.

Peace has shot us in the foot here, but the bullet seems to have ricocheted into his foot too.

But in a way Levy did that with Modric too and we pretty much universally applauded him too. Modric wanted out, Chelsea wanted him for big money, we kept him, Modric backtracked and played a great season and then, i believe, we accepted less from Madrid than Chelsea were offering.

Since then it seems the other clubs know they've got a battle on their hands if they want one of our players and its served us well. Levy's own tactic could have bitten him

140,000 for not working is one hell of a year, I’d say.

Peace hasn't - Levy has. It's got a side effect for WBA too though

Levy messes around with silly bids that serve to wind up the other club to the point of them not wanting to deal with us. Case in point here - see also Schneiderlin from last Summer

This is all such a wind up. I think I prefer when we used to just announce a new signing with none of this mind annoying build up.
I will now view WBA through the eyes of their niggling chairman. <badger>

Correct. We accepted appx £5m less and thereby got a great last season out of him that saw us playing 'triffic football, which raised our global profile tremendously and also - and most crucially - prevented a major rival from strengthening.

When you factor in those details, a £5m 'loss' doesn't really seem like a loss, especially to a club of our size. No disrespect to WBA but by comparison, they are absolutely not selling to a 'rival' if they sell to us, and a £5m loss (which is what it is likely to be unless he scores 30 goals this season) is likely to hit them much, much harder than us.

Maybe, but these chairmen have egos/reputations to consider too. Personally if he doesn't buckle i'd be fairly pleased with Peace if i was a WBA fan right about now. We haven't bid what they wanted so no deal. If he resists player power then more kudos to him.
After a net spend of 0 over the last 4-5 years we must have the money. We could have wrapped this up weeks ago.

Is it just me or does Berahino seem a lot more pissed off than you'd expect if it was just the club turning down bids?
Wonder what he's referring to or if he's just being a typical footballer?
