Just to put the question in context... A year ago we expected LVG as a bare minimum to get us Top 4. After a turbulent season he achieved that bare minimum. I don't think I'm wrong in saying that United fans then expected us to strengthen in some key areas and LVG would then be judged on making a real title challenge this season. Some of those positions have been addressed, but key positions such as a striker to replace RVP and at least one CB, haven't. We may have got by without a CB if we had bought a proven striker imo. As things stand, I don't believe we will challenge for the title. We will achieve Top 4. Our style of football, the lack of any goal threat up front, and a questionable soft centre in defence will combine to make us underachieve. We don't look convincing, and bar a handful of games last season, we never have under LVG. I think the recipe of this manager combined with the gaps in this squad is simply not able to win the league. I haven't included other competitions but I doubt we'll get further than the last 16 of the CL. Anyway, I think it's a fair question and I'm interested to know what others think.
Well, if it's true that two more strikers have left to be replaced by one in, no. That's four out, one in. That is just mind boggling. Surely there had to be one more in? Surely!!!! If so and with the keeper issue now sorted then I think we're in the top four mix again. In what order I don't know but we won't win the league or CL unless we improve 100%. We just can't, not the way we currently play. I say aim as high as we can, win a domestic tournament, go as far in Europe ad possible then go again next season. I truly think the two big prizes are beyond this manager.
Not a chance with LVG. I don't think anyone else could have come in after Moyes and stopped the rot so quickly, and for that we should appreciate his talents, but as far as forging a competitive PL and CL squad - then no. Its as clear as anything that his style of football has had its day - even the mid-table sides have pace and energy and LVG's pedestrian style, with the focus on possession and completing passes just won't work. Klopp would work for me - he's on his year off, so that would tie in nicely with LVG's stated intention to leave in another year.
LVG was brought in to stop the rot. That is to get United into the CL . Winning the title would be a bonus. To be honest, I cannot see LVG winning the title. Hope I'm wrong but it would probably be the next manager.
I don't see united winning the title with lvg. He is too possession conscious which doesn't really work here. We need a manager that would take risks which LVG is clearly not. Also a manager needs to have a plan B, and lvg's plan B is hoofing the ball to fellaini. Works sometimes but not enough to win us the league. Simply put, we can't win the league trying to pass the ball into the net all the time. Oh lest I forget, I don't think LVG can atract top players especially if other teams like chlesea and man city are also interested. Most players will choose to play for mourinho or pellegrini rather than van gaal because of van gaal's history of quickly falling out with players.
Now we are agreed that we are out of the title race, can we all calm down and cut LVG some slack ? We are now all up to date with LVG 'a style. I have said when he was appointed that those who expect the team to play like Fergie's team - all out attack, swashbuckling from the very minute- will be in for a disappointment. Since we are now all enlightened why do we keep on acting all surprised, baffled by the team's current style ? Surely we don't expect LVG to change now when he has been managing for 30 years and successful throughout. Fergie took 6 years to work out a system. LVG had only one year and he won't be with us more than another couple of years.
I will be happy if we manage to avoid relegation tbh. I'm assuming that's now our station under this failure of a manager. Hopefully hoofball can save us. That and the mystical sideways pass. Bamboozle our opponents into a 0-0 hammering.
LVG is the bestest in the world, and United are the best. Di Maria was the bestest too before he betrayed United. Anyone linked with United is the best too. Best
To be fair that's no different to you posting about the Chavs. Your lack of self awareness is remarkable!
They say the worst thing is hope: The title for United fans at the moment looks far away because City are so dominant and seem so far ahead. As long as we have a good competitive team playing good football (!) I am happy. And I am prepared to give LVG the benefit of the doubt.
