Dick Advocaat has moved to clarify the uncertainty over his future by insisting he has no intention of quitting Sunderland.

Advocaat has been the favourite with the bookmakers to become the first Premier League manager to leave his position this season after a stream of speculation that the 67-year-old could have second thoughts over his return to Sunderland in the summer.

I have never said that I would quit this club because there is no reason to
    Dick Advocaat

However, Advocaat was a far more upbeat figure at his pre-match press conference after the signing of Swedish international Ola Toivonen has eased his frustration over the need for further recruits.

And Advocaat - who remains on excellent terms with both chairman Ellis Short and sporting director Lee Congerton - addressed the idea that he could leave the Stadium of Light after the transfer deadline.

“With all respect, I have never said that I would leave,” he said.

“Maybe sometimes my face wasn’t always happy, but there was a reason for that.

“But I have never said that I would quit this club because there is no reason to.

“We have really, really great people here at the moment. Everybody on the staff knows what to do.

“I speak regularly with the president and I fully understand his concerns from the past.”

Sunderland will attempt to secure their first Premier League victory of the campaign against Aston Villa this weekend, before the two-week international break.

But Advocaat has been encouraged by Sunderland’s last two games, despite their defensive problems, and is eager for a positive result against a team likely to be scrapping alongside the Black Cats in the bottom half of the table at the end of the season.

Advocaat added: “They (Villa) have invested a lot of money, but they also brought a lot of money in by selling (Christian) Benteke etc.

“It is important for both teams to stay together, rather than having a gap.

“But I think the way the last two games have gone, we have showed we can score goals.

“Yes, we have to improve defensively.

“But the work-rate and passion against Swansea was positive.

“We know we have to improve again, but we will do. We can only become a better team.

    --------------------------------------------------

Right now that's sorted can we not just accept our predicament with finances at the club and just get behind the team and Dick from here on in? Got to be better than than the petulant half arsed whiny rebellion that seems to sweep through our fan base. Our team needs us this season. Could be the difference between vast riches and fighting administration.

Can't wait till the window shuts so we know what we have to work with and make the best of it.

While I understand the feeling of disappointment that the rumoured 50 mil transfer budget turned out to be complete nonsense, I was and still am a little disappointed, it's definitely time to accept how things are and get behind the team.

Besides, apart from a bit of a dodgy defence that will improve as the season goes on, we've got a pretty good team even without any more signings.

i also hope that everyone will stop bleating on about the fact we ain't spent zillions, coz we won't, it's what we have to deal with, so let's crack on.

we've done good business under all of the circumstances, and the team is defintely better than last

Hope springs eternal, and this is the time for some concerted effort from all concerned and to get behind the club, the Swansea game could be a catalyst, with the crowd right behind the lads there is no telling what we can achieve. This is an important few months ahead. Haway the lads.

Agreed but I really think we need another attacking player if we're to stand a chance of getting early safety.

Glad he is staying because he is about the only manger we could attract that would be able to get our woefully average player to play well enough to stay in the league.

If he keeps us up with this squad he will be manager of the season. No manager of the decade.

Don't make me laugh we never sign anyone decent on deadline day.

The squad we have now is who we will gave minus a couple who will leave.
