For an article on the blog we want to review The Gills' top ten games since the turn of the century. We want you to list your top ten (in any order) and then the most popular choices will make the overall top ten which will be featured on the blog. UTG!
Well that will take some thinking about. Avoiding the obvious of the trips to Wembley, which weren't enjoyable at all; they were just stressful!! The game which stands out was the FA Cup trip to Highbury in 2002. It was in Arsenal's unbeaten season (I think) and it was a real pleasure to see the likes of Pires and Henry at the top of their game. I know we lost 5-2 but both teams played some quality football on that day, and Ty Gooden's equaliser is still one of the greatest goals I have seen live. It was also special as it was the return of Adams after a lenghty lay-off, before that day I thought that he was over rated but to see his reading of the game and movement off the ball gave me a new respect for him. I'll have to think about the other 9
http://www.gillinghamfootballclub.com/page/MatchReport/0,,10416~22293,00.html 2003 Vs West Ham. 2 nil Gills, great game. Sir Trevor Brookings only defeat as West Ham Manager.
Gills 4 Norwich 3 in 2001 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/1262011.stm 4 nil up (could have been 5) then Norwich nearly pull it back, awesome game!
And can I interest anyone in Gills 5 Swindon 0 on the opening day of 2009/10 season http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_2/8186090.stm
So far it looks like we have: Arsenal 2002 FA Cup West Ham 2003 Div 1 Norwich 2001 Div 1 Swindon 2009 league 1 And I'll add 2 play off finals 2000 Wigan and 2009 Shrewsbury That's 6. Any more for any more??? Gills 3 Charlton 2 in FA Cup 2004 1 nil down early, great triple save from Bossu, Tommy Johnson's best game IMHO http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/3349181.stm That's 7 Now for number 8. 2000 away to Blackburn Rovers. Our first season in Div 1 and Rovers unbeaten in 8. Add to that Gills having never beaten Rovers either, home banker you think? NO WAY! 1-2 scoreline to the Gills, add to that 2 red cards and a home team line up of Friedel, Curtis, Bjornebye, Short, Berg, Duff, Dunn, Flitcroft, Hignett, Jansen, M. Hughes. And a bench of Daily, Kenna, Bent, Carsley, Filan. What a game, what a result. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/1039141.stm Have to say I'm loving remembering these old games of the last decade. Number 9 and it's 2005 and cup time again. Pompey this time, this game sticks in my mind because of possibly the WORST goalkeeping performance I've ever seen, cheers Jamie Ashdown, 3-2 to the Gills 2 from Byfield and Crofts scored the winner in extra time. I can still hear the constant chants of "dodgy Keeper, dodgy keeper" http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/league_cup/4258464.stm Ok finally it's back to 2000 again and more cup giant killing, 3rd round FA CUP and Sheffield Wednesday come to Priestfield. John Motson in what can only be described as a scaffold box above a tempory stand at what is now the Medway Stand. After going a goal down it all seemed to be over for the Gills, then goals from Andy Thompson, Mark Saunders and (the best goal I've ever seen) Trigger give us a 3 - 1 win and sets up our only ever appearance in the quarter finals ( yep the 5 0 loss to Chelsea where JT scored his first ever professional goal.) http://www.worldfootball.net/spielb...htelfinale-gillingham-fc-sheffield-wednesday/ There's always the Bradford game in the 4th round that year too. Not forgetting the Villa game a couple of years back where we were cheated by a dive in the box and Jacko's wonderful goal. But the above 10 would be my choice. UTG
I Loved beating Leeds at the end of the 09/10 season. 3-2, although we were ultimately relegated that unexpected win gave us some hope! Also it had a nice nervy ending with a leeds comeback and the thought of relegation looming! But we held on, shame we still got relegated!
The playoff games... really? I mean the results were great but did anyone actually enjoy watching them? I certainly didn't. There was too much expectation on the team against Wigan to be enjoyable and the Shrewsbury games was pretty dull.
They are in my top 10 yes. The thread is asking for people to make suggestions for 10 games since the turn of the century. If I was to make a list of criteria to judge my top 10 games by (things like occassion, importance, atmosphere, drama, result, performance, etc etc) overall the playoff games would make my top 10, not in every aspect granted but overall yes. The Gills Wigan game was included in a top 10 list of play off finals done by sky just before the last set of play off finals http://www.skysports.com/interactive/top_tens_story/0,25722,11689_3597308,00.html
I am surprised and slightly disappointed more people haven't commented on this thread. Thought there would have been lots of interesting games people would've remembered since the turn of the millennium. I now know how HOADIE must feel when he's the only person to reply to a thread. Lol. Come on people any more games you want to add???
There should hopefully be some top games next season, But the one I loved was 23rd may 2009, Play off final, great game,
