How much does a first team player cost? Because whilst our many recent failures in expensive transfers have been mentioned again and again, what was the chance that all our signings would have succeeded? Assuming you don't get upset if every one doesn't succeed then surely you can offset the failures against players that cost less than a first team player costs on average, and say that the net loss is not bad. In other words if we lost £n million on Soldado, Paulino, Lamela etc., then perhaps Erikson, Chadli etc. are now worth £n million more than we paid for them. The overall loss is nowhere near as much as people make out.

Why are people saying leave Berahino and go for Austin, aren't they two different type of players?

I agree. Getting both would not be overkill in my opinion. We need goal threats.

Berahino, Austin & Yarmolenko would do for me, especially if Lamela goes. No such thing as too many.

Same with midfield generals. If we got Illarrameni & Wanyama I wouldn't be mad at all. That'd just sort our midfield balance out swiftly, and allow us to go two up top more securely.

Bentaleb and Mason need solid competition, and Dier needs somebody to study under if he's becoming a DM.

This 'allowing for the youth to develop' is good, but not at the expense of players like Lloris wanting to stay. Concede the top four challenge too early and we may as well sell him now, and give Alderwiereld back to Southampton.:emoticon-0145-shake

With the right players we could challenge for the top four, even with this manager who splits opinion. With the current squad, it just ain't happening.

I'm sure the Courts would throw it out as it interferes with bargaining rights

Because for some reason people think we need more 'strikers' irrespective of whether they are good enough. I've never understood why people are so sold on which position players are in. The most exciting team I ever saw were the Dutch in the 1970s where anyone would pop up all over the pitch.

I'd rather play Lamela, Chadli, Townsend, Bentaleb or Alli as a striker than pay someone like Austin

    Really?

Might work against some teams but....

Poch tried playing Chadli as a striker when Kane came of in the Stoke game. We saw how that turned out.

We need a goal threat that can bully and beat a team and score at any moment. Especially when we don't have destroyers in midfield.

This is how you keep teams from all out attack. When Kane came of, Stoke were happy, pressure to defend was off. Relentless attack commenced.

Defence doesn't end in the midfield.

Pullis and WBA just want as much of Spurs money as they can get and if it falls through they still have the player they want anyway. They are in a very strong bargaining position. You also wonder about the macho thing and everyone saying they will not be pushed about by Levy and his 'hard' rep. I'll show the bastard etc etc!

Exactly that. However, it's no different to Levy in the Bale situation with Real Madrid. Fair play to them.

I think we should grab Austin, who apparently they have an eye on as a replacement. See if that effects their willingness to deal.

Illaramendi is supposedly heading back to Real Sociedad for around £12 million.

    Didn't want him anyway <doh><doh>

Guillem Ballache is claiming that Spurs and Liverpool were never even looking at him, though Id take that with a pinch of salt.

I don't think you can judge the success of a strategy from 20 mins in one match. We could have brought Austin on for Kane and lost 3-2.
Chadli is better than Austin in every respect as far as I can see

Er - won't that make it a bigger disaster for them to sell him?

When playing Borough football, our coach moved a striker to Dm, the guy was similar to Tevez, turned out to be an inspired move as his ability as a player changed the game with his drive from midfield.

So maybe Power has a point and we should lock down transfers and instead of signing players, switch positions when needed as I'm sure Bentaleb would relish the opportunity to play striker and win over the fans with his finishing ability.

If only we had a pacy right sided player...I’ve often thought Meanwhile 3 of the 20 supposedly fastest players in the world are Spurs’ right sided players: Walker, Lennon and Yedlin. Maybe we’ve made some kind of deal with the devil not to play pacy RMs.

Can’t think of what Satan has given us, though.

In any case the chances of getting Yarmolenko are slim and fat.

Son to Spurs sounds like click bait to me.

Yes. Also, try signing seven players in any window and you’ll find it’s extremely likely all but two or three will be busts. You don’t have enough starting spots for them all. You also are handicapping them and everyone else because your teamwork is now TBD. The fabric of continuity which supports a team has been ripped apart. The lesson is, don’t try to sign more than 2 projected starters in any window. Maybe three.

Interesting how Paulinho and Soldado scored the other day. The truth is I don’t even think our 7 were bad choices, all things considered, as a group. The one really bad purchase we made recently that I can think of was Fazio, who absolutely did not suit our style of play. I might add Paulinho to that, though. He’s a good player, but he’s not quite good enough to start anywhere for Spurs. The fact he’s not quite good enough at two positions still means he’s not quite good enough.

We were linked with Son a while ago, before he joined Leverkusen.
He was at Hamburg and there was some talk about van der Vaart having a word, IIRC.
Could well have been bollocks, of course.

Versatile forward, young, quick and hard working, plus he has shirt sale value.
Doesn't surprise me that we're back in for him, though the price seems a little high.

Really exciting signing, he's a pacey left winger, with great work rate and has a great scoring record, totally left field, love it!
