Football is a system based sport and if you can implement a system that all the players understand and one that is effective the majority of your work is done. Swansea are a good example of this as is the Chilean national team, the system is far more effective than the individuals and limited individuals taken from that system may underacheive. Add quality into the right areas in this system Vidal, Sanchez for example and the team is elavated into something more and a higher level of success is acheivable.

My point, get the system right, get the players to believe in it and add the magic, Coutinho, Benteke for example and a lot can be acheived. Picking over every single position looking for a worldie in place everywhere is simply not going to happen.

    true true.

solid system, good work, beleif to work together and keep going even if you get a knock back all go a long way

LFC gave up twice last year... unforgiveable.

Rodgers couldn't find a system.. also stupid.

This year the true tests are to come... when the first kncok comes how do they respond.

how many of those not playing come in like they are committed when the chance comes etc etc.

Is it though or is it just that those teams who find a system, like the ones you mention, do well for having found one? I'd say football is a tactical sport.

I firmly believe a team can be greater than the sum of it's parts and this occurs with great coaching when all players buy into the vision and work for each other to benefit the team as a whole. You could say success comes to those who have a vision and a strategy [maybe that could be the 'system' you mention] - identify where you're going and plan how to get there.

I think they are very similar points, tactics are incorporated into a system one doesn't work without the other. I'd say my point stands in both our analogies.

Agreed we now have to understand that a performance like that is required against every team we play and not just when it's a big game.

Like Luv said it should be both. Systems can be rubbish and over reliance on them can be not only unsuccessful but also boring and tedious. Some systems are great on paper but unless you have the players to carry them out they flop. And of course you have to adapt your tactics to the circmustances and to the oppostion.

Right systems + right players + right tactics + right coaching =========> WIN

(((of course I should have added the right coaching. Essential <whistle>)

I'd agree. I think we both identified that the whole can be greater than the sum of it's parts <ok> I'd just never thought of football as being system based but as you say it could be down to the words used.

I'm even gonna be positive. If Arsenal has nicked it at the death I would still be pleased with the game last night. The performance was great, Benteke is a beast and everything that w*nkotelli isn't, I actually don't see where Sturridge fits in when Benteke is fit. Coutinho is entering the realm of Suarez, in that he is just such a good player to watch and to see a great partnership between him and Benteke is very surprising but great at the same time. Firmini doesn't look very fit, but he still did more in the 1st half than Lallana has done in the first 2 games, given time he will only get better. Can has to start in midfield, the bloke drives the ball forward, tracks back with epic tackles, he is more Gerrard esque than Henderson. The defence actually looks good for once, since Benitez days, Clyne and Gomez have really improved us.

Don't have Sky Sports and no stream so couldn't watch, but followed on Twitter and from what I could gather we were great first half, rank second half, possibly settling for a draw. An improvement though on the like-for-like fixture last season.

Our finishing left something to be desired (no change there then!) and MIgnolet worked his little socks off keeping them out second half.

As it stands it's 7 points but 2 goals. We need those goals to go in more often. Is finishing going to be an issue again this season?

We actually had some very good chances 2nd half. All counter attacking and if there had been some better decisions I think we could have scored, or at least made Cech pull off more great saves
