I cannot really comment on that. I grew up in that education system of the 80s and 90s, and I seemed to have done okay for myself. Okay paying job, which funds my rather exuberant lifestyle.
To summarise: I support grammar schools. I went to one. I support this petition. The taxpayer should not be supporting a football club in this way. I don't object to West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium but they should be paying a lot more for it than they are.
I went to a Secondary Modern school. I got a good education, not just academic but moral. I got good exam results, I didn't go to Uni, but had a job lined up with a Stockbrokers. I rose through the ranks to run a department. I made a lot of money which enabled me to retire at 55. Many people have received a good education in Comprehensive Schools. But I agree about Grammar Schools and the old system. I also believe in Technical Schools and would like to go back to the system of Secondary Modern, Technical Schools and also Grammar.
See what I mean about intellectual snobbery? Anyone with an open mind will admit that both major parties have made education too much of a political football, especially anyone who has personal friends in the teaching profession.
We seem to have got a bit side tracked here into an education thread? I went to John Roan because my mum slept with the headmaster
I'm still baffled why you would want West Ham to have the stadium, Nick. It gives them a distinct advantage over the club you support.
If West Ham are relegated they have to pay £1m less in rent reduced to just £1.5m per annum? That's what really got my goat. When Tottenham and Chelsea wanted to use Wembley while their grounds are being modernised they offered £4m and £6m per annum respectively so why are West Ham paying so much less? Dicky would have loved to have had £1m reduction in fixed costs when we were relegated from the Prem!
AHLL - knowing you to be a regular reader of the Daily Mail (like me), have you seen their interview with Karren Brady today? In her own words, all WH has done is get some help to re open an empty shop that nobody wanted. Busy bodies like CAST and Prague Windbag should butt out.
Is it more to do with your dislike to CAST and Richard Hunt why you're really not getting on board, Nick? I'm no fan of either, but find it hard to argue with their stance. It could have an impact on the future of charlton. That shouldn't be easily dismissed - you just have to read back on how when there were two big clubs in the woolwich vicinity, the impact it had on the team that remained, and how two teams now located north of the river benefited long term.
No, my stance on this is not a footballing one. My intrinsic wider loyalty is to the working class English football supporter. Truly the Poor Bloody Infantry, who have been shafted for years both by Govt and the back scratching football authorities. I remember going to West Ham in the 80s when it really was pie n' mash on the street corner, and the Pearly King and Queen. Who ever stood up and raised an objection when that very worthy culture was swept away ? West Ham fans have been forced from their own area by mass immigration and now live mainly in South London and Essex. Nobody asked them if they wanted to be part of this horrible social experiment, it was forced upon them. Like many people I have grown heartily sick over the years of seeing taxpayers money spent on causes and people that contribute absolutely nothing to this country or wider society- the recent example of the laughable Kids Company being a good example. Why should the Govt pay a charidee to bring up and feed other peoples kids ? Force the parents to show some responsibility, FFS. I see the wider picture here, that the real fans of West Ham, the decent working class English long forgotten in 2015, have finally got a small slice of the pie that is normally squandered on new mosques and food vouchers for bogus refugees. Good luck to West Ham and its fans.
I don't see it as an issue, if fans want to watch WHU in the Championship while we're in the prem that's up to them
West Ham fans ''decent''? Huh, and I though I'd heard it all Still would argue the bigger picture is the impact it will have on the club you and the rest on this board support.
This is not about clubs, supporters and the impact that it will have on the likes of Leyton Orient. This is about spending millions on something that was never going to be used after the Olympics. Like what will come with Qatar, thousands of poor migrant workers, trying to put food on the table for their families will be sacrificed building stadiums that will eventually go unused. Is that worth the cost of human life? The Olympics Legacy was a lie told to us, to keep us happy about the cost of it. If there was a true Olympics Legacy then there would have been no need to rent out (at taxpayers expense), the stadium to West Ham United.
I went to forest hill boys. My brother was in Richard Rufus's year. Makes for awkward small talk these days!!!
Enough of the even in Erith. It used to have a very good grammar school which also had a good sporting tradition producing the likes of Keith Peacock. It had a very good academic success record to boot. it is exactly places like Erith that would benefit from their reintroduction.
I drove thru there after the Welling game. First time in at least ten years. A very sad sight these days.
