No - the heptathlon was very much the priority until her no-mark long jumps. From that moment the long jump on Thursday became her priority. Her coach will have told her to take it easy, and rightly so.

If she'd run her guts out in the 800m, it would have been like slogging your guts out to win a heat in which you could have qualified with ease (eg non-qualifiers 50m back), only to run out of steam in a final as a result. It's about pragmatism and maximising performance when it matters, not about emotive things like sulking or pride.

Basically the rule that heptathletes can't drop out unless injured is a stupid one.

Delighted to be wrong about Gatlin. He ran about 0.10 slower than I expected him to.

So some will drop out after one event as they are out of contention??
Its the whole concept of sport. One, you take part. Someone has to lose. You always do/try your best. Did Jess slog her guts out? No.
She needed to sure more courage and go out and do her best. Weak and sulky.

Great win for Jess. Great ambassador for sport in general. Conducts herself with class on and off the track. Could tell it meant a lot to her today. Chuffed for her. Bolt also class act. Glad Gatlin didn't win but him on the podium is not great for athletics. GB top the medals table.

The highlight for us was hearing the idiot US commentators have to eat crow after all agreeing that Bolt probably wouldn't even medal since all the Americans were now faster than he. Some of the same commentators that described Linford Christie as a "throwback". The coverage of Athletics ("Track & Field") over here is appalling. Sometimes we don't even find out who the non-US athletes are in any particular event. Gawd, I wish we could have David Colebag back!

Bolt is amazing, good to see him get it over on Gatlin again. Was very impressed with Asher-Smith in the 200M at 19 YO she is a real talent.
