Seems that he was pulled from the wreckage. I cannot imagine how. It's all desperately sad.

I've had a couple of weeks with Windows 10 and may I say what a pleasant surprise it has been . Generally, I have always been lucky with my computer stuff in many people's minds, but then I keep my antennae up. When other people go nah, I say maybe. It's one reason why I'm writing this on my free quad-core pc. People may remember that I fished it out of a recycle centre. Something obviously very innocent had gone amiss with it and the silly owner had thrown all of it out instead of replacing the small offending part. You can easily do that with pcs. With laptops and notebooks it's much more difficult and with tablets and phones it's bloody difficult, if not impossible. Anyway, back to Win 10

I acquired it because someone gave me an old Win 7 PC which had a decent sized hard disk [HDD] on it, but they'd clogged it up and so the PC spent its life in treacle. Well, the 7 operating system [OS] was on the HDD so I put it into my rescued 4 core and Microsoft said cooee, you've had a major change of hardware. But they let me register it all anyway [I'd never had the product key either, so they gave me a new one] and eventually I updated the thing like crazy and eventually amongst it all the Win 10 invitation came along. This means that after all these years I still haven't paid for any MS software [thank you, Bill]. Anyway, Win 10. What a nice thing it is. Edge, the browser is quite fun, although it'll take some going usurping my beloved Firefox. I love the highlighting tool, and Cortana personal assistent works quite nicely too, although that did require a bit of setting up. The Start menu is fun and way better than anything from XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1, as is the general ability to use the thing. It's intuitive right from the start [probably because, as it's an upgrade, it already has some data on you, twerp], and best of all, it's fast. Way faster than 7. Videos play noticeably smoother and with more detail too. The only criticism I might have is that the sound plug-in that the Win 10 VLC app uses is a bit choppy. Fire up Win Media Player or Groove Music [oh dear] and the quality is better. I'm sure that will be ironed out by VideoLan. Win 10 does seem to assume one HDD in the computer though, and it doesn't take easily to me redirecting all my OS document links to the 2nd larger data disk. I've always done things that way since way back. It's very old school and it works very well. W10 took a little convincing, but we finally came to an understanding. One disk for System, one for Data. Very reliable and safe.

Did I have problems installing.? Well yes I did, but only because I hadn't quite updated Win 7 to the brim like I thought I had. Once I had that sorted I had another go, and about an hour later it was all waiting for me. It was fine from the beginning, yet it got even better within a few days as driver and software updates came pouring in. I've always said that, on the whole, Windows XP SP3 was the best OS ever produced by MS. Well, this one might be properly better. Still early days.

TSS did you turn off some of the dodgy Win10 settings? Like the setting that allows other people to piggy back on your connection to help them download Win10 quicker?

Blimey, it's been on and off loads of times. Not a problem.

The main installation problem people are getting is not having their computers updated enough in the OS they are upgrading from. I've given this advice to several people who have had problems and all have reported back that the installation has gone without a significant issue. Of course, Microsoft do impress upon people that they update their computers to the hilt before installing Win 10. There are potentially well over a billion users upgrading for free to Win 10, and so I wouldn't expect zero problems.

Sadly I was there today, not the first time I have seen a fatal air crash at an airshow, certainly one of the worst though. I can't believe that the pilot could have survived, it would be a true miracle.

Thanks it was a bit too close for comfort! Some of my colleagues that went by road didn't get off of the airfield until ten past eight this evening. I was lucky went by train.

Yes I heard the road of course completely closed. Show rightly called off tomorrow. Questions need asking (especially over stunts above busy roads) but for now all thoughts with the casualties and families. Awful day.

Having seen the unfortunate footage of the crash, one can see that the pilot actually pulled out of the loop, but he pulled so hard on the stick that the Hunter lost practically all air speed and so it semi-pancaked from just above tree height. That would have got a fuel fire going but the pilot himself may well have been relatively safely strapped in and somewhat cushioned from the blow. That's my take on it. I do hope he's OK.

In critical condition. Astonishing he's still alive. Police saying there's a chance they'll find more bodies as time goes on :(

Before I wrote the above post I came on here to comment on my watching the first episode of ZEN, from around 2010, again. I hadn't watched any of the 3 episodes for about 3-4 years and I'd quite forgotten just how brilliantly made they were. Why that twerp BBC1 controller [who has since left, I believe] cancelled it I have no idea. It made them a stack of money from overseas sales and got a big audience here. It's better drama than almost anything on TV [I'm sure you GOT fanatics would argue the toss though] and the only reason why I'm not going to rattle through the next 2 episodes is because that'll be it again for another 3-4 years. These things need to be savoured.

It looks like he did the Pilot thing and stayed with the aircraft trying to lead it away from danger. Truth is, he could so easily have ejected and then the aircraft could have gone anywhere. Very tragic.

EDIT: Just seen the video footage again on Youtube, only it isn't edited, as by the broadcaster. I'm not linking it. It's easy to find.
The pilot didn't pull out of the loop. Given another 20-30 feet he may well have done so, it was that marginal. He appears to have crashed right next to the road or ploughed into it. The smoke obscures the detail. One might say, thankfully.

Grave of the Fireflies is good, about a couple of kids who survive one of the American fire bombings of Japan, and I enjoyed The Wind Rises which is about an aircraft designer. Pom Poko is quite amusing, but is very much a kids film about some wierd shapeshifting racoon type creatures trying to stop deforestation. Howl's moving castle is also quite good too.
It's the animation style I enjoy about Ghibli films as much as anything else, very well drawn and detailed. I watched Tales from Earthsea just because I enjoyed the book it is based on as a kid, but obviously it misses a lot of the detail and nuance from the original. Worth a watch though.
The Ghost in the shell series are excellent too, but are a bit more adult and hardcore than most Ghibli films

Good shout FLT, my wife makes a wicked rhubarb and ginger chutney, with a touch of chilli and garlic. Great with anything including cheese on toast

An ex girlfriend crashed my car into the railway bridge on the way to evercreech station many years ago. I was asleep in the passenger seat so got a bit of a rude awakening when the car finally came to a stop half way down the embankment. My GF was uninjured too, but can't say the same about the relationship or the car as I had changed from fully comp to TPF&T just the week before so got nothing for the write off.....she always did drive too fast for her ability. The ironic thing is that if I had stayed with her, I would never have got together with the nightmare that I eventually married first time around :emoticon-0102-bigsm
