so rumours are growing that we might be signing abdennour and for the sake of my post let's say it happens. Could cool play at left back. His biggest problem has been in the air at centre back and being a left back that would not be an issue. Pace may be a problem but with thauvin as cover his positional sense would be perfect and he won't lose the ball all the time like Haidara. Thoughts!

Or maybe Haidara will begin to progress next to a decent CB and a supporting winger?!

Cant see that working out at all. I don't think thauvin will be doing much work going back. He does seem to defend a bit on the front foot mind and Colo will not be mobile enough to play left back.

Not a hope of Colo as LB ..slightly less mobile than the corner flag.. ..Colo in the deep sitting DM role ..i could see however..as he can ..play football passing etc..plus isn't that where he started out?

Colo should only ever play as a CB. He's played at CDM before and was raped. He doesn't have the pace to be a LB.

You don't need two centre backs who are both ball winners. Maybe move Colo back to play more of a sweeper role behind the ball winner and vary the back-four to suit who we are playing. How about also playing a back 5 if we do get Abdennour with Colo playing just behind these two. This might also take a bit on the onus off Haidara's attempts at defending and make use of his pace going forward.

This would lead to the following formation:

There is the possibility this might leave us a bit narrow but we know Janmaat likes to get forward and Thauvin also seems to like moving wide as well.

Colo is awful. He should be nothing more than a back up behind the likes of Taylor, Lascelles and Dummett.

Both Colo and Dummett would be better at left back than Haidara. Its not really the point though. Could he do a short term job there, yes but I believe you need balance. I'd pick Dummett for now until we can get one in.

Its simple though really, we have to bite the bullet and buy a left back. We don't have one who is good enough, or one who will reach the required standard. If Dummett or Haidara had the potential then you'd suffer a bit of pain to get them there. They won't though so we have to do what is necessary. I think McClaren is well aware, hence we've been linked with a few. I also have more faith in the club to do the business when it is possible given the recent progress. It'll be a massive shame if we don't get at least one more defender this window. Personally I think we'll sign at least one of the required the centre back and the left back.

Longer term we need to shift out Haidara, he's not even good enough as cover in my opinion. Dummett neither, he has shown a touch of promise at centre back, but maybe that is just looking at when the well is dry.

It's already been said - Abdennour or Matip in, Colo to DM or second choice DM, or that old player role on Football Manager, Libero!!!!

He could really do a good job as a Makelele type. Not as hard, but he's alright at reading sometimes. Would have to sell Tiote though, as we'd then have four deep lying midfielders.

Even Ryan Taylor would have been better at LB than Haidara...

But no not Colo, when I think of the problems Colo has they are simply exacerbated by the demands of playing LB (or RB). If he's on the pitch it's central defence, I think the main step forward in this situation would be having him on the bench and - with the options available - Dummett as LB. Tell him to keep it simple and pass the ball in a simple manner when he gets it to someone with more ability, so anyone else.

I don't know about Lascelles as he is young into his career but Colo, despite his best years being behind him is better than those other two ****s. Saylor still being here after having **** seasons upon **** season really blows my ****ing mind. Dummett is basically Saylor mark II.

Looking at the team and your selection criteria, I can't believe you picked Krul ahead of Darlo....

I don't think Haidara has been too bad so far in the first two games. Technique on the ball needs some serious work but I think he got up and down the flank quite well in both games and has been fairly solid. He should of been there to stop Tadic putting that ball in for Southampton's equalizer but aside from that hasn't' done too bad so far.
